Bought my mum a pianola for her birthday and it’s an absolute travesty these fell out of fashion.
Music + leg workout
I have a player piano with an additional device on it to allow me to use digital and midi formats for it as well. This is the thing you see sitting on the keys and the black box underneath the piano.
The red boxes all over there are piano rolls- the door sliding doors on the front slide open to reveal the original tracker bar. This allows it to play off of piano rolls. Since it’s all solid state electronics (this is a “newer” mechanical player, as it was built in the 1960′s), the rewind function is a little too harsh on older, more fragile rolls, where I can’t control the rate of the rewind and risk tearing the paper…
So at one point, I had a goal to have this converted to a hybrid player- one that was capable of rolls and midi output. However, that kind of task is horrifically invasive, requires the keybed to be mostly cut out for solenoids to be placed under the keys, and would probably cost in the ten’s of thousands of dollars for the manual labor and parts.
This new device, however, cost a fraction of that (but it’s still pretty pricy), however, it does the job without being an invasive and potentially damaging procedure to the piano.
Since then, I’ve been modifying midi files to function on it- they all need to be on channel 1 and type-0 files, and simplified as much as possible. But the end result is always pretty great when they work. As a result, I’m preparing to start doing semi-regular streams where I will be working on the midi files on stream, and viewers can see the output as I’ve exported it out to the piano itself.
It should be a lot of fun.

I hope somebody puts a black MIDI onto a player piano roll one day.
A modern-day marble-driven pianola!!

Pianola FTW. 😍🎹😍 #pianola #playerpiano #museemecanique (at Musee Mecanique)
Pretty sure this is a Weber pianola and not a Steinway as the Weber insignia is round but Steinway is a stylized Greek lyre.
