In my anger, the phone-wire connected to the wall had snapped. I stared at the frayed wire between my finger tips, then back to the ringing phone. 

I put the receiver to my ear. I heard something. The noise wasn’t clear, wasn’t of anything immediately discernable, but I recognized it as mouth-noises, lips smacking together, sharp inhales of breath; the voice to come from the phone was, again, one I recognized. 

“Hey Jim,” my eyes widened. I didn’t think I could still be surprised, but every so often something new happened, “me an’ Mikey Lip -- we’re stuck...” I was ripped away from the voice, could hear whispered conversing on the other side of the phone, could hear Mikey murmuring something, “-- we’re in uh, I dunno, some kinda place...” 

Mikey Lip, Chris Bianco, they were long gone. 

“What do you want me to do about it?” I asked, 

“You don’t get it,” Chris’s voice threatened to cut out, a wave of white noise diluting his voice, “we’re in some kind’a liminal space, trapped between vision an’ context,” such ethereal words sounded so wrong from blunt Italian tone, I closed my eyes, hard, tried to reboot my brain manually -- it didn’t work. “You think you could come get us? This place got a real fucked up vibe,” I hadn’t thought about this pair in years, “Chrissy,” I said, “you got whacked.” 

“Says we got whacked,” leaned away from the receiver, spoken to Mikey, “yeah, well,” back to me now, “who did it?” 

“...” They knew what business they were in, that didn’t make it any easier. 

“So no dice on the lift home?”
