September is Suicide Awareness + Prevention Month - What Would You Have Missed?
TW: discussion of suicide + mental health issues
If I had died when I attempted suicide at 14, I would have missed figuring out who I am. I would have missed making some of my closest friendships and experiencing some of my happiest moments. I never would have known what it was like to be crazy about a girl and have her feel the same way about me.
Of course, it's not like everything magically became easier after my attempt. There were hard moments, and there were times when I didn't feel like staying. There were times when depression and anxiety left me feeling hopeless and where situations with my family made me want to give up.
But you know what? Despite all that, I'm so glad that I'm still here. My life is still unfolding - I've still got a few more months of high school left, and years and years beyond that - and if there could be so much joy in hope in such a short time, I'm sure that there'll be more to come. I'm sure that there will be more challenges too - but I know that staying will have been worth it.
So now, I ask you:
What would you have missed?
