reading about captive bonobos before people knew they were a different species from chimps is hilarious because the primatologists all go "surprisingly nice boy that doesn't bully anyone. Sensitive and considerate. My favorite of the lot."

Submitting because you can't put a video in an ask, but. I personally witnessed this at the NC State Fair, and I think this might be legal here, but I know that it's definitely fucked up. This was in the animals building, so the primate (I don't know what kind, just that it's one of the tiny ones) was being taken around to see cows, sheep, birds, etc, and would have come through a lot of big crowds, flashing lights, loud music, etc to get there. Obviously this is NOT okay, and I don't understand why they felt the need to take them in this public of a space, but I know next to nothing about primates, and I want to ask, just how bad is this for the animal? Like, do they get sensory overload easily? I know mostly about cats, so I think first of how they would react to this (very badly), and I don't know how to recognize signs of distress in primates at all (though I don't know if there's enough video of this one to see more than what general species they might be)
The pet in question is a squirrel monkey. The little guy definitely seems nervous/anxious by the frantic looking around he's doing. Fortunately he doesn't seem dangerously overwhelmed- a terrified primate is either actively attacking or curled up as small as possible. The animal was probably overstimulated by the sounds, smells, etc. I don't think it's in serious danger of disease transmission from the other animals since it's enclosed in the stroller and most diseases require fluid to fluid contact or contact via a flea. Monkeys and basically all mammals can contract and die of COVID-19 so if there were unmasked people in the building that's without a doubt the biggest threat to this little one.
Unfortunately this is a very common case of a primate taken from his family to act as a surrogate child for a human family. It's unfair to the animal and I hope he ends up in a proper facility before things get bad. I've personally helped hand rear a young squirrel monkey who was surrendered to a sanctuary and despite their size they have some sharp chompers and can do real damage. We wore protective gloves when handling him.

One of my dog’s greatest flaws is that he has No Conception of how long human arms are. He cannot understand that a human cannot reach him while seated in a dining room chair if he is lying on the floor waiting for a belly rub; arms just aren’t that long. He does not see why a human seated at one end of a couch cannot scratch his chin where he lies curled up at the other end. He thinks I have the arm span of an orangutan.
