  • Like a feral knitwear commercial from 1978, Stanley Debas brings us Lily Cummings, steadying herself on the tail-fin of a burgundy coupe. Wearing a chunky-knit sweater she coordinates with impeccable good manners to the automobiles lustrous paintwork. With woman, machine and the dawns early light in such perfect harmony, this leaves me with only one question:Exactly which hair product is Lily using to get that volume in her platinum tresses?

  • Well into the yuletide spirit, having watched Last Christmas the other night, I have to confess to a warming girl-crush upon Emilia Clarke. This composition for glossy panopticon GQ Magazine perhaps doesn’t do justice to her lithe figure but hints at the versatility of a woman who is so much more than the sum of her roles to date.

  • A classic ‘60s look from the the gorgeously svelte Lucy Boynton. A sleeveless mini-dress with polo neck pairs well with the streamlined looks of her black shoes - perhaps redolent of the bold sweep of the XB-70 Valkyrie. And allowing our minds to wander, the checker board invites you to join once more, in that timeless game bounded by two dimensions, each of a single byte.

  • It is easy to be intimidated by the clock, each tick steeling another delta-t from the remaining ration. But be reassured that nothing very terrible will occur as the clock runs down, and the seconds ebb, and you are left holding that which will not yield. There is no shame in recognising that which wasn’t for today might still be realised in another time.

  • Providing an efficient, space-age take on the classic Alice aesthetic, Miss Watson appears to have been unable to find the volume that covers temporal and spatial displacement. As such, excursions in other realms are likely to be off this afternoons agenda. Instead she sits a little shamefaced atop a spiral stair to nowhere. Take courage, dear Emma, for it will invariably be a small book, no larger than a Baedeker and just as crammed with useful ephemera.

  • I remember sharing a taxi with four colleagues across the flat plains of Holland and hearing Britney Spears for the first time. And by preternatural chance the video was playing in the airport lounge an hour later. And I’ll be honest, if ever there was a creation myth for my gender identity this moment would be writ within in it. Here was a beautiful woman who I didn’t for once just fancy - I truly identified with her. Though it seemed inconceivable, I wanted to be her. And now two decades distant, we can reflect, through a glass, darkly that the future held wonders for both of us. And tragedies too. But hold on, like Britney’s right hand, to the crystal light of hope.

  • My life reduces to a chessboard, and in hurried conversation with the mercury-addled Hatter I pause for a dose of tea. And a choice. A simple binary decision which can be made in an instant, and carries little burden in the moment. The red pill or the blue pill? What, I ask, if I take no such medication? And the flinty King, still in play albeit from the first row twitches his beard and tuts at the folly of this fillie. And yet the seconds tick, and my indecision has yet to bring down this game. And so I wait, my ancient gameplay, as clock anounces each expiring increment.

  • Our lady in this scene has - to misquote - the longest reddest hair, though whether she has the prettiest green eyes anywhere remains unclear. As one who clings to old ways with talismanic faith the SteamPunk aesthetic is something I flirt with from time to time. A good corset is actually very good for posture, as long as one remembers to exhale after you are fastened in. In this scene our heroines decolletage is adorned by frills to the edge of the blouse and brought together by means of a stout leather strap, which acts as both a point of intrigue and an ultimate guarantor against wayward bosoms.

  • To be honest the tempo of modern life - even in these peculiar times - rarely permits me anything other than a morning shower. But where time and abundant hot water allows I have been known to laze in the bath, alone with my thoughts. A daydreamer by both inclination and lifestyle choice, if the polycarbonate womb were instead to grow ornamental gold legs, and be transmuted to enameled iron, I might travel to autumnal glades. If my muse should like to join me, taking form as a humble snail upon the rim, I’d be pleased to tolerate their sticky, stardust trail.

  • We have of course encountered Natasha Kalashnikova before, although this time she is somewhat more conventionally dressed in a quite on-trend mustard yellow pinafore. Paired with a long-sleeved black voile top Natasha’s body art shimmers on her arms like an exotic ore suggestive of transition-metal wealth and abundant strength.

  • Bringing our homage to solid foundation wear to a close (for the moment): I’ll admit I am becoming something of a bore about the uplifting qualities of regular exercise. But frankly there are few feelings quite as enervating as that endorphin-rush after a good run or cycle. I’ll confess my corner of the world probably isn’t ready for me exercising in nought but my smalls. But I’m glad Stanley Desbas has shared this energetic image with us to be clear that femininity is absolutely compatible with fitness.

  • Continuing a theme of paired-back-to-my-knickers honesty that isn’t entirely in keeping with our principles, we nonetheless tip our hat to Chloe Sevigny. Our lady wears an adorably intricate body-stocking over a very pretty bra and panties set. The details of white cotton collar and cuffs frankly intrigue and confuse me, but when the dial of decadence is turned this far, who really cares how rooted in reality a composition is?

  • Lily Cummings posed for Stanley Desbas some years ago in the suburban badlands somewhere outside New York. Wearing a very capable pair of knickers and a yellow sweater somewhere in the megaton range she looks strikingly to the horizon as Stanley chases colour and light in the quest for that perfect Ektachrome moment. I love how Lily’s curvaceous legs claim their share of the stage and the ruffles of the jumper make it clear her bust is nobody’s business but her own.

  • Titled Mermaids are from Mars this dreamy sequence from Chotronette invites one to contemplate migration from afar. What enchantment might a traveler from arid Mars experience as that most precious commodity - water - falls in fat droplets from the sky? And how comforted might she be by the lush fecundity of the forest floor. If all that was overwhelming, who could blame her for curling like the oversized droplets that sit beside her nourishing otherworldly flowers.

  • Kailee O’Sullivan wears an intricately detailed ivory gown and takes solace from the temporary relief of closing her heavy eyes. Our lady has selected three volumes from the library, and here in reading room five hopes they might provide insight to the present crisis. As a foundation Kailee has chosen John Stuart Mill’s On Liberty. Building from that - and the sound injunction to education - she has George Orwell’s The Lion and the Unicorn. But to start matters off Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake sits atop the pile. And if Kailee looks burdened, it is only that she reminds herself, fiction does not have to become reality.

  • Some weeks ago I confided to one of my Tumblr friends that the joy of autumn was shopping for the winter coat. Now I know last years coat will do. But to allow myself just a little ration of passion, I am prone to indulge in capable, snug garments that make me feel womanly even as they keep me warm. This red faux-fur coat is worn by the stellar Scarlett Johansson. It is - unbelievably - neither Coat nor Star who are centre stage, but rather a capacious handbag that we are certain Tove Jansson would be proud of.

  • In 1982 Deborah Feingold captured a photoshoot with the breakout singer of Everybody, Madonna Ciccone. Perhaps the most well known features a overtly sexual take on a cherry lollipop. And whilst that picture is very sensual, I prefer this one, with all it’s flaws and it’s honesty. Because what really endeared Madonna to her copy-cat fans - I still include myself in those ranks - was this was a woman who you could be like, if only you were bold enough to use that much hair product and just the right application of makeup.

  • When we last met Lucy Hale the storyboard related a dalliance with darker, controlling forces. I’ll be honest, we knew it was a fictional narrative, but couldn’t help but be concerned. We are glad to see her restored here to the world on her terms, wearing a lovely Bo-Ho cream dress with burgundy tights and a respectable pair of chunky black boots.

  • We’ve all been there, haven’t we? Stuck in a Castle. A vampyric Count seeking to drain our life blood for his own nefarious ends. What is one to do? Fortunately Allison, a very level-headed gal, has a plan. Keen not to leak onto her cotton dress, and aware of the effect her decolletage has upon others, she gamely rolls her skirt hems up such that the Prince of Darkness might drink from her femoral artery. It’s a bold plan, but one we might yet be glad to add to our toolkit. Personally I’m still going to sharpen this wooden stake. Just in case, you understand….

  • In an illustration of the absurdity of social media this elegant woman, who won two Olympic gold medals for Great Britain, was trolled for her appearance. Were Dante to be writing his magnum opus today there would be a special circle of hell for those who reach for hurtful insults to mask their own insecurities. Let us celebrate - perhaps belatedly - the magnificent achievements of Rebecca Adlington - Nurse, Swimmer, Mother and Tall, Beautiful Soul.
