You don’t have to avoid us, you know.
    Pardon?
You don’t have to stay away. They—we—don’t hate you. We’re a family. We’re supposed to be together.
Rachel smiled as though she’d heard an inside joke. She took a sip of her coffee and set it down.
Turn around and tell me what it says under that chalk portrait of Tolstoy.
Charlotte twisted in her seat. She squinted to read the chalked-in calligraphy.
Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.
Do you know why they put those words on that wall? It’s because this place is full of people who have had to find their own families. Because not all families are meant to be together.

When Ash was published in 2009, it got one starred review as well as one that criticized it for not including any positive male role models. The publisher pushed it hard, but although it was a finalist for many awards, it didn’t win any.
Later I learned that some committee members dinged it because it didn’t have a coming out story. Ash is a lesbian retelling of Cinderella, but being queer in her world is normal, so she doesn’t need to come out. Some people thought it was unrealistic. Note: It’s a fantasy novel.
My most recent book, Last Night at the Telegraph Club, has done better out of the gate than any of my other novels, including Ash. LNatTC has received 7 starred reviews (!!) and hit the Indie Bestsellers list for two weeks in a row! (Not the NYT though.)
This has made me very happy, but I’m under no illusions. This book would not have been a success at any time in the past 14 years of my career. First, I wouldn’t have had the skills to write this book until now. It was hard.
But also, LNatTC is about a queer Chinese American girl. This is not a type that’s generally found in bestsellers. And the book has queer sex in it. It doesn’t fade to black. This probably would’ve kept it out of school libraries until very recently.
And it doesn’t shy away from its cultural roots. I mean, there is Chinese in it. Literally, 中文 in character form. Until the last couple of years, all non-English words in YA were italicized to call out their foreignness.
I’m thrilled that LNatTC has been doing so well, but I know that this success comes out of decades of fighting a system that has traditionally prevented books like it from being published. I see the changes that have happened since I started my career and I’m very heartened.
At the same time, countless authors of color and queer authors have had their work marginalized for so long — and maybe they haven’t had a spouse like mine to support them financially — so they likely gave up. We’ve lost so many talented writers to this system.
I hope LNatTC continues to be a success, but I often remind myself that success is in the eye of the beholder. Hitting the NYT list doesn’t equal success, and nor does winning an award. Many excellent books never got either of those kudos but were still deeply meaningful to readers.

Saw a post about how Fight Club’s bro-ish hypermasculinity makes it circle around men entirely and turns it into a movie for women. Interesting how a website so focused on fictional queer male relationships forgets that we actually exist.

#Obviously anyone can watch any movie they want #OP also mentioned Reservoir Dogs and Succession #But Fight Club? the book written deliberately as gay as possible by a gay man? #If OP wants to say that about 300 I don’t give a shit #But Fight Club is by an actual gay man ffs let us have /something/ #(While I’m here might as well say I don’t know when we started being called MLM instead of queer but I don’t like that either) #(I mean I personally don’t use queer much anyway but it’s way better than MLM)

One book on my wishlist was on sale at 99 cents and since paying more to recharge the card than the actual amount spent was almost offensive I also got Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao

#and the 99cent book is last night at the telegraph club which looks really good #and on Monday there were other two books at 99cents so this week alone I got 4 books and they're all very queer

December 2021: The Seafarer's Kiss (The Seafarer's Kiss #1) by Julia Ember

Having long-wondered what lives beyond the ice shelf, nineteen-year-old mermaid Ersel learns of the life she wants when she rescues and befriends Ragna, a shield-maiden stranded on the mermen’s glacier. But when Ersel’s childhood friend and suitor catches them together, he gives Ersel a choice: say goodbye to Ragna or face justice at the hands of the glacier’s brutal king. Determined to forge a different fate, Ersel seeks help from Loki. But such deals are never as one expects, and the outcome sees her exiled from the only home and protection she’s known. To save herself from perishing in the barren, underwater wasteland and be reunited with the human she’s come to love, Ersel must try to outsmart the God of Lies.

A couple months ago, I asked @biandlesbianliterature (who I recommend following) for recs on a sapphic Little Mermaid. You see, I'm obsessed with the story and it's been something I've yearned for years now to read. And the blog recommended this book.

And I bought it in October, planning to read it, but I'm struggling through my Fable book. Inu and I came up with a rule that once a year, we can pick a book that we would have to buy. She had picked Justin Roberts' biography. I picked this one in hopes to actually read it. Plus it's winter themed.

November 2021: The Queer Principles of Kit Webb (The Queer Principles of Kit Webb #1) by Cat Sebastian

Inuy21: I really loved this book! I fell hard for Kit, having to put with Percy XD The story was intriguing, and it was to put it down. In fact, about halfway through I binged the rest of the book just because I had to know if my theories would play out! It also had a good, sweet wrap up for Percy and Kit which I loved so very much.

Jo: I really enjoyed this. The writing is a bit simplistic, but I loved that there could’ve been so many misunderstandings and instead Percy and Kit talked things out every time. But the ending felt incomplete. I know a lot was left out because of the next book, to the point that reading the summary of the next book did a better job of a more complete ending. Inu disagrees with me on that, but whatever. I’m harder on books than she is.

So I’m currently in high school, and I know gsa clubs get a bad rep most of the time and I get where that comes from, but last month my friend dragged me into one of the meetings with them and I realized something really sad. Before then, I had never spoken to an adult queer person about being queer. There were teachers there who were queer, all of whom I had seen before but had never spoken to. And it was the strangest feeling sitting with adults and talking about sexuality and gender. It’s hard to shake the feeling that I’ve done something wrong when I go to those meetings. I spent a lot of time thinking about this and Idk, I just think that the generation divide between queer people sucks, and it’s bullshit that I feel like I’m the one in the wrong.

It's weird how detached I feel from the mainstream DDLC fandom, because I pretty much exclusively follow queer DDLC fans it's a bit of a shock when I go to places like the DDLC subreddit or I scroll through the DDLC tags on Instagram because it feels like an entire different ecosystem compared to the queer DDLC fandom

#I go onto the DDLC tags on Instagram and I see *those* jokes I thought died out in 2018 #Same thing with the subreddit to a lesser extent #I feel like the mainstream fandom is definatley more in touch with the games darker themes and focuses on that specifically #While the queer DDLC fandom is more about the girls recovering and just being happy and gay #OFC there are exceptions to this but just in a general sense #Mainstream fandom focuses on the games dark themes itself. Queer fandom focuses on characters #If that makes sense?? #I swear they're different- #DDLC #doki doki literature club #Android.txt
