4this is related to the HOA thing but for a while i worked for an outdoor market that was membership-based (the vendors had to pay dues). certain booth spaces at the market were far more desirable than others. there was a very complex system in place allocating “points” that determined who could pick their space first. you earned points by how many times you sold at the market (ostensibly to encourage attendance, bc if everyone stays home on a rainy day there is no market) and also by doing odd jobs that needed doing (since otherwise no one would want to do them). so seniority and the amount of free time/schedule flexibility you had were of course HUGE factors in how many points you earned and therefore what kind of space you got to sell in.
