i’m such a prude like i know people get drunk to have fun and shit but i will never be able to understand getting drunk to the point of being unable to control your body and just being a mess
y'know, i remember reading once that the average time from someone's first episode to getting a proper bipolar diagnosis is eight years. eight. YEARS. that's a long time, but considering my first symptoms (sleeping problems, hyperactivity, mood swings) started when i was very young and i wasn't diagnosed until i was 16 or so? it actually took longer than eight years for me, all of which were years spent visiting specialists and being on meds! i was diagnosed with adhd, depression, anxiety, and fucking reactive attachment disorder (which i didn't even HAVE) all before any of the many professionals i'd seen ever thought that i could have bipolar, despite showing all the symptoms for early onset bipolar 2.
i just find it hard to wrap my head around that it takes years and years from the onset of symptoms to get a diagnosis. mental health is complex and i don't want to discount the difficult jobs that mental health professionals have, but i'm certain that if more awareness was raised around bipolar disorder, we could get quicker diagnosises and possibly even save lives.
