DRAGON BOOSTER: REMAKE | CARD 013
Vince bub redesigned himself a lil uwu
Just the other day, with my previous post on mature content, I briefly brought up that recent She-Ra reboot and how it seemed perfectly content with utilizing a simple, and therefore, lazy and juvenile art style. As I mentioned this, I was suddenly realizing a very common pattern with regressive character design changes, especially of female characters, as they don’t make me feel like a man.
I look at just the styles of the two incarnations, and I think to myself that there have clearly been artistic regressions within American animation since sometime after the start of the 21st century, with no styles that cater to my edgy self. Not only do we get more simplistic art, but we also get a total lack of spelled out, in-your-face femininity in the designs. With the complete removal of d-cups, I can’t even tell if anyone is a woman. Another thing that destroys the mature look of the originals is the lack of cleavage. How can I feel smart now?
One particularly bad example is Spinnerella becoming a near-featureless blob of a character design when the original had actual elegance. Are people just afraid of curves now? I can’t even tell that Spinnerella has bones anymore. Why didn’t they just stick to the more realistic designs since they’re less lazy anyway? At this point, Starfire from Teen Titans looks more like a She-Ra character.
The sad part is that I keep seeing these ladies getting their bodies neutered by complete prudes. Sure, the designers hardly say it, but that’s basically the only reason such redesigns could have been made. Just look at the Tifa image below.
Not only is she given a sports bra that conceals some of her beauty, but they also clearly sized those bazookas down! I don’t care if having a sports bra makes more sense for a fighter, this is supposed to be a crazy anime-ass game, so why bother with having a more sensical outfit? Obviously, having a sports bra just so it “makes more sense” was just a dumb excuse from the oversensitive designers responsible for this massacre! I don’t care if I can just look up giant anime titties online, I will not accept female characters with smaller chests or especially chest reductions to Tifa, which will encourage the idea that women have any sort of bodily autonomy!
It isn’t just making women less voluptuous either. Sometimes, it’s just the mere act of putting the characters into a new style can prove to be a nasty issue, especially when it proves to only be done out of laziness.
This incarnation of the Ninja Turtles is pretty egregious with design changes as well, if only because they’re now put into this simpler style that could only be done out of laziness, particularly in the movement. I mean, you have the 2003 series that was less campy compared to the original on top of having a fine style that doesn’t suggest going a cheap route, but then suddenly you provide us with this. Why would any form of stylization be more simplistic anyway?
Between those cartoon reboots and this image from the Sun and Moon anime, it becomes clear that the simplistic art style is a mere product of animators deciding to half-ass anything with no passion whatsoever. I just feel more justified for my outburst over a lack of mature content. Why do the likes of the Sun and Moon anime and other cartoons with simpler designs even feel the need to do that?
Luckily, exceptions like this (Castlevania 2017) exist, but if I showed this compared to the below picture of another reboot:
Which one of the two styles look like there’s actual passion behind them? In general, the idea of abstraction just strikes me as childish, impersonal, and most importantly, very PC in intentions.
Oh, I had drawn them a month ago and forgot about it… Again.. So Mortu and Ch'rell redesign with utrom’s body :p
TSCreators November 2020 Event: reputation + 1989′s aesthetic.
Following the bombastic success of 1989, Taylor Swift stepped away from the spotlight as her public image spiraled and friends became enemies. reputation is almost the other side of the coin that is 1989, with Swift owning and rewriting the narrative that others created for her.

so, after watching a few SU critiques, something caught my attention…. why didn’t steven look anything like his mom? matter of fact, seems they added the whole half gem aspect at the last minute.
So I decided to fix that! Introducing, my Steven redesign!
Changes are as follows…
Hair - Ok, so.. brown hair + Pink hair = … Dark Brown or Black? I get genetics can be funky at times, but… ??? I tried giving him the same hair as his mother but it looked rather strange. So I made it this pink-ish brown, so it stands out and doesn’t stand out at the same time.
Clothing - Based it off of older steven’s outfit. This is younger steven, but I changed it to be less boring. Some pants and a t shirt is kinda boring even when you consider the t-shirt has a star on it, which isn’t enough to make him stand out. Grown up Steven is boring too, and while I originally planned to make a redesigned grown steven, I envisioned this steven to have a somewhat muscular build maybe?? Not sure.
Oh yeah eyea also, changed the pants into shorts to highlight his naive, happy-go-lucky nature he had in the first few seasons, the weird kagumine rin/len straps is a random design choice I made because it looked cool?
Style - This is probably the part where I get the most crap? I made him look more like an anime protagonist, but that’s because I modeled him off of Deku… Sort of? My goal in mind was to keep in mind that Steven wasn’t supposed to be very tough (at least until near the end), and a cinnamon roll coddled by the gems who guard him. But shonen protagonist energy is fun.
Overall - Hair color and style changed up, outfit was changed a little, nothing really too big?
Thanks for listening to my weird lil’ rant (sorta) and I hope you like my take :) note that I didn’t watch SU so forgive any mistakes here.
A little Alan Scott redesign for funsies imagining him as an older sort of captain of the Green Lantern Corp!
Here’s the full image. I honestly enjoyed redesigning him. There are a lot of details for sure, but ultimately it was fun coming up with new ideas for this character, who is still unnamed because I suck at names. The last image is his original design.
