  • Non stancarti di andare, Teresa Radice/Stefano Turconi.

I’m making some publicity to Italian artists, we have a lot of good graphic novels here, and lots of awesome authors.

A couple of lovers is separated when his attempt to return home is blocked by the Syrian civil war. She’s pregnant waiting for him in Italy; he journeys back to her from his native Syria as a refugee, facing an endless series of painful struggles. All this is interspersed by various flashback timelines both from her and his life and her mother’s youth.

I’m extremely fond of Turconi, because he used to work on WITCH and I lost count of all the drawings I copied from his stories when I was younger. I owe him a lot of how I draw. But here, free of the structure of WITCH or the Topolino Magazine he really gives way to all his abilities. Every flashback has a different colour style and palette, his drawings are vivid like flashing images of a true hurtful but hopeful story. And everything is helped by Radice’s writing piercing through one’s soul.

    - - - - TIMELINE

When Cyrus Trueland was born, his parents rejoiced, not just because of Cyrus, but because of his twin brother Abel as well. For five years the couple had tried to conceive children, and now they got two for the price of one. So growing up for the twins, who were almost identical, was as much fun as anyone can imagine. They often pretended one was the other, or confused innocent bystanders. They spend a lot of time together, even as they grew older. Cyrus was technically five minutes younger, and Abel teased him to death because of it. They went to the same school, although Abel proved a much better mechanic than his younger brother, and was early on given the opportunity to follow a course at the University of Applied Sciences. Cyrus became jealous, but not in a way that he blamed his brother, but in a way that he started to work harder and more obsessively so he too could go to that university. After all, the last thing he wanted was to be forced to live separate lives. And he felt Abel was fearing the same thing, so the two brothers went to work, starting some elaborate plan to get both of them to the university. This meant sometimes cheating to ensure Cyrus would pass a test, or staying up till dawn to ensure they both knew exactly how some piece of tech worked. Eventually - through what his teachers called a great improvement - Cyrus reached an invitation for a special program at the University, albeit a different one from the one Abel was supposed to follow. But at least they were going to the same Campus.

Cyrus was a student for approximately a year when things went completely wrong. One day, he returned to his dorm room to find everyone had to gather on the square because of some public speech. Soldiers were back in the City of Iron, so security was tight. His brother was already there, so he would just have to stand in the back. And so he did, waiting at the edge of the crowd for the end of the show so he and his brother could go back to studying, after all he still needed the help to get through his classes. Suddenly he heard screaming more to the front, and chaos erupted afterwards, students were told to return to their dorms, and most of them did. Others were pushed and told to get back, despite how much Cyrus struggled to find his brother, he ended up alone in his room pacing back and forth between the window and the door. Abel didn’t come back home. And never would. The next day their family received word that a Mage had been found among the students, they had been brought to a government facility and killed. They didn’t clear up who it was, not to any of the students or worried parents. But Cyrus knew. Cyrus knew that Abel hadn’t come home, he knew that Abel would always come home to him, and something inside him told him he was no longer there. Cyrus picked up his belongings, send a letter to his parents explaining that he now feared for his life as well, and fled the building, fled the campus, and managed to flee the whole city on a not so well secured merchant train.

    - - - - HEADCANONS

#01 - - - believes he might also be a mage, though will probably never try to find out for himself.
#02 - - - he changed his name, being born cyrus trueland, he took up his brother’s name as his last name, because then people might assume he was from the city of wheats.
#03 - - - while he isn’t a great mechanic, he does help out with those tasks, or wherever else he’s needed. he’s already killed on the job, and has since then been surprised at how little he cared, how little it shook him.
#04 - - - cyrus is a true romantic. he spend less time on school and more on his many romantic ventures, having had several relationships while abel just spend most of his times on school.

Holy hell. This was a badass movie, man. Very well written and directed, with some spine-tingling creepiness and super cool surrealism. Seriously gave me the chills 3 times, and dropped my jaw at least twice with how cool a few of the scenes were. I also like the unique setup. In every #haunted house story the #writer has to come up with a reason the family doesn’t just bone the fuck out, right? Get to dippin. Boogey. Bounce. Slide, son. Be gone. Lol Usually the reason is that they can’t afford to. “Now, sugar lips, you know we put everything we had into this home. Where are we gonna go? This is it for us. It’s either this or the streets.” Well this group of #writers came up with a new reason to keep the couple there and built a beautifully told story around it that was both captivating and emotionally gut-wrenching. Tbh, it got a little heavy on the “feels” for my taste at the end of the second act, but it was a damn good twist in the tale. And the ending was a touch anticlimactic but still satisfying. Seriously one of the best #horror flicks to come out this year. 8/10 on #netflix (with me being slightly generous considering they didn’t nail the ending, imo). Don’t miss this one.
