    Charade (1963)

In this comedy-thriller movie, Regina Lampert found out about her husband's sudden death after arriving at her home in Paris. Ever since then, she felt like she was being followed by 3 people that turned out were after her late's husband's money affair. Then there comes Peter Joshua (Cary Grant), whom she had briefly met at the holiday resort, which came to cover Regina from the threats. The movie progresses with Peter's multiple identities uncovered and does keep Regina questioning (therefore, the charade).

Actually, this is one of the few classic movies I have watched, therefore I have limited references for other comparables. But I found this movie very charming; it is set in Paris and we were brought to see the Parisian cultures through the hotel building, the al fresco brunch, the metro, and the yacht dinner. Not to mention Hepburn's Givenchy wardrobes that brought glamor to the next level.

The overall nuance of the movie is also light. It is, indeed, a thriller movie, but the director (Stanley Donen) had also worked on many romance movies, therefore romance and comedies were present abundantly in this work as well. Regarding the romance, I found a fun fact that Grant, who was 25 years older than Hepburn, was quite hesitant with the romantic scenes due to their wide age gap, and he requested the scriptwriter to make as if the woman character who efforts in their romance. We can actually see many scenes in the movie where Peter actually mentioned their age gap on several occasions and told Regina that "she is still a child".

The movie is easy to digest since the flow always moves forward and there is almost no parallel plot, so the audience can always focus on the current scenes. It also follows Regina's POV most of the time, which will bring the audience into the main character's perspective and question the plot just as she does.

With its convoluted quests, no wonder this movie is dubbed as "the best Hitchcock movie Hitchcock never made", and I would recommend this movie to those looking for a classic mystery movie with a lot of romance and some comedic lines on the sides.

    One Dress a Day Challenge

    Day 58

    Color: Yellow

Charade- Audrey Hepburn as Regina Lampert

Vintage coat alert!  Audrey wears so many cute coats in this movie...but I think this is probably my favorite.  I love the color and the silhouette really suits her....the high neckline is super interesting (she usually pairs these coats with a scarf).  And the black leather gloves really complete the look.

The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy, Vol. 2

By Yu Shimizu and Asagi Tosaka. Released in Japan as “Seiken Gakuin no Maken Tsukai” by MF Bunko J. Released in North America by Yen On. Translated by Roman Lampert.

I am, as readers of this site well know, easy to please. This can sometimes be a bit frustrating when I have series that don’t do anything particularly wrong, but are also not particularly stellar. The Demon King Master of Excalibur Academy falls under that. I will admit that I find the fact that the Demon King is in a 10-year-old body irritating, but it is mostly avoiding fanservice and groping, so that’s not a big enough reason to move on. The books are short, the prose is readable, the girls get things to do, and the battles are pretty cool, so boxes checked off there. That said, this really isn’t going to be making anyone’s top 10 light novels list anytime soon. There was an argument recently about whether using the word ‘generic’ is pejorative, and yes, it probably is, but there’s no word that better fits the series than this. It’s like eating a slice of bread. No butter, no jam. Just the bread.

The Academy is put on the back burner for this volume, with the biggest class-related event happening being that Leonis skips class. There’s a good reason for this, though – a huge ship is arriving carrying the Fourth Princess, who is paying a visit. Unfortunately, a horde of void creatures break out as she arrives, causing those who have gathered to see her to have to be evacuated onto the ship. Also unfortunately, this turns out to be a plot by terrorists, who are there to kidnap the princess and gain more equality for beastmen. Also also unfortunately, the terrorists have a mole in their ranks who has her own agenda, which is “kill everyone by having the ship slam into a reef, so that she can get her hands on a bunch of demon swords. Fortunately, Leonis and the girls from the first volume are there to stop them.

One of the interesting things in the series is the fact that it’s post-apocalyptic, and not very far away from it either. This allows Leonis to be thoroughly confused at how much has changed since he was alive, and also allows the book to constantly be interrupted by monster attacks, which are well-written but also mean that there’s not much actually happening here, even with the short page count. We do get a few revelations about Regina, Reselia’s maid, comrade in arms, and Girl With A Secret (TM). The secret is not hard to guess, and I will admit that I was frustrated that a meeting we were building up to did not happen, but that’s the trouble with long-running series like these. (Also, sadly, the princess was very underwritten, and I wish we’d seen more of her.)

That’s one interesting thing about these books – they read like they’re cancellation proof. The author has been told “your name is big enough, so we’ll guarantee that you won’t be cut after two novels”, and it shows, as there’s a lot of long-term things going on here. Unfortunately, that means we don’t really get satisfying answers in THIS book. It’s a series that is “good enough for now” to a T.

25 Days of Actress, Part One!

Inspired by Be Kind Rewind’s video series for the month of December, here are the first movies I recommend you check out, if you haven’t already. These are all movies that are pre-2000, and feature a performance by an actress that I enjoy (and the actress did not win Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress for the role).

These are in no particular order!

    1. Olivia de Havilland in The Adventures of Robin Hood

Yes, if you follow my channel, you know that I love this movie whole-heartedly, and will find any excuse to talk about it.  And Olivia is one of my favorite actresses, so I figured this was a perfect place to start!  Her Lady Marian is kind, strong, and smart; someone who starts out believing one thing, but realizes (and admits) when she’s wrong and does her best to try and help.  And given the the way ingenues were usually viewed in movies of the era, I have no doubt that a lot of this is down to Livvie’s performance.  She could take a two-dimensional character on the page and give her so much life onscreen!

    2. Genevieve Bujold in Anne of the Thousand Days

As much as I planned to try and keep all this movies on the more light-hearted side, I could not ignore this performance.  Genevieve Bujold was once asked about if she had seen the other actresses who have played Anne Boleyn, and whether she could think of an actress who could do her justice.  She thought about it and said “Anne is mine”.  And I kind of have to agree,  I haven’t seen another actress play the role the way she does...it really is a definitive performance.  She nails Anne’s girlish free spirit and fiery temper and transitions beautifully into the harder Queen Anne, who is simply trying to stay alive.

    3. Ruth Hussey in The Philadelphia Story

Now, this really is Katharine Hepburn’s movie....her performance as Tracy Lord is iconic and no one could have done it better.  But I want to give a little love to Ruth Hussey as Liz Imbrie.  This woman gets some of the best one-liners in the entire script and she delivers them with such ease.  Half the time, she seems to just throw them away, but still completely nails it.  And also, she is a really developed for a character that might normally have been hidden in the background.  As much as my red hair says that I should play Tracy, I think I’d have more fun playing Liz.

    4. Audrey Hepburn in Charade

My favorite Audrey movie!  Audrey is absolutely charming as Regina Lampert, a widow who unbeknownst to her, has $250,000...and the men who helped steal it want it back.  This is one of those movies that every time I watch it, I discover a little something that I hadn’t noticed before.  She and Cary Grant have fantastic chemistry...and I love the fact that they made Regina the one doing the romantic chasing, not Peter/Alex/Adam/Brian.  And I think a lot of people don’t realize how strong Audrey’s comedic timing was.  And this is a great movie to discover that!

    5. Joan Crawford in The Women

Now, I could have easily picked any of the actresses in this film...there are so many to choose from!  But there is something about Joan Crawford’s performance as Crystal Allen I just love.  She is the antagonist, but there is something almost sympathetic about her...especially at the end.  When you really think about it, her story arc is actually really depressing.  Also, fun fact: I based my performance as Ursula in The Little Mermaid off of Joan’s performance in this movie!  Right down to the eyebrows.

    6. Judy Garland in Summer Stock

My favorite Judy movie! :)  I mean, Judy was great in every single film she appeared in, but this one was special.  I love her arc of starting thinking that one life is for her, and then discovering a love for a completely different kind of life (and a different kind of man).  Judy and Gene Kelly have unbelievable chemistry as Jane and Joe....whether they are dance battling in the Portland Fancy, or having a quiet moment on the front porch, it just radiates off the screen.  And I read that initially MGM wanted to cast Mickey Rooney, as a sort of throwback to Mickey and Judy putting on a show in the barn, but I am so glad that it didn’t work out that way.  I don’t think the movie would have been the same classic it is today.

    7. Jeanette Macdonald in Rose Marie

I have been a fan of Jeanette Macdonald and Nelson Eddy movies for as long as I can remember.  And while Maytime is probably my favorite, this one is probably their most well-known...and it’s definitely one of their most fun.  Jeanette plays an opera star who is known for being incredibly difficult and temperamental, who then has to rough it in the Canadian wilderness to find her brother before he leaves.  There is so much wonderful banter between these two, and their chemistry absolutely crackles.  If you believe that they were in love offscreen, this was apparently at the happiest part of their relationship and it really shows.

    8. Shirley Jones in The Music Man

This is one of the best movie musicals ever made, IMO.  It is pure candy confection and just a lot of fun.  It’s one of those movies that is guaranteed to make you smile.  Shirley Jones plays Marian Paroo (Marion the Librarian), an “old maid” who is trying to figure out what’s up with this so-called band leader that blows into town.  This movie felt like a transition for Shirley Jones, away from the wide-eyed ingenues of Rogers and Hammerstein to the more mature roles she played later in her career.  Marian seems like an ice queen, but she is actually quite vulnerable and Jones balances the two beautifully.
