sainthood and c!tommy
DISCLAIMER: playing a little fast and loose with not only canon but with the qualifications to become a saint. church prime is its own religion with its own theology, but it's inspired by christianity. The only canon I think I will be stretching a bit is the act of revivification itself, since the origin of the book (before Schlatt) is what we know the least about.
Also, I was very tired when I wrote this. If there’s anything that I missed or that you agree/disagree with feel free to add your thoughts!
TLDR; Not a saint, but he’s close. He would be beatified, and would be known as Blessed TommyInnit. He needs one more miracle after death to be a saint.
REASONING UNDER THE CUT!
There are four steps to becoming a saint in the catholic church. The individual under consideration has to be approved at each tier or level in order to be canonized (achieve sainthood). Saints can only be canonized after death, and TECHNICALLY! Tommy did die. He’s okay now though (relatively). SO let’s get ready to evaluate how much of a saint Tommy really is!
1. Examining life (becoming a “Servant of god”)
To start off, you usually have to have been dead for 5 years to even be considered. That’s been ignored before, and I’m ignoring it now. In order to become a “servant of god,” you must have lived a life of holiness, kindness and devotion:
holiness: To be holy means to be devoted entirely to god and living by god’s standards. I think tommy’s constant belief in primes and return to church prime throughout his struggles (war, exile, general destruction) makes him pretty holy.
kindness: Tommy is someone who cares a lot for his friends and those around him, as shown through his loyalty and protectiveness. Tubbo, Ranboo, Wilbur, and Techno are a few examples that come to mind.
devotion: easily seen in his constant worshipping; farming the prime path, ringing bells, the prime logs, respecting the holy land’s laws.
2. Lived a heroic life (becoming “Venerable”)
To be venerated, Tommy must have lived a life of heroic values. This means fulfilling 7 virtues, theological (faith, hope, charity) and cardinal (prudence, justice, temperance, fortitude):
faith: like devotion, but him never straying from church prime and coming back to church prime after almost losing faith in exile (”i don’t even want primes”).
hope: hope is all about overcoming obstacles to “be in union with god.” Exile is a good example of hope, with the prime log he had not only in logsted, but in Techno’s basement as well. Also any time he stayed steadfast in the face of hardship (disc war finale, rallying the server pre-doomsday).
charity: ALSO KNOWN AS LOVE! The most important virtue, and Tommy has shown so much charity. Tommy helped found and fought for L’manburg, giving up his discs for independence. He gave tours to new members (Connor, for example), and before doomsday, searched for and gave back Mars, Sapnap’s pet.
prudence: aka governing and disciplining yourself through reason. One example would be rejoining Tubbo pre-doomsday after realizing he had become someone he didn’t want to be, or coming to the realization Dream was abusing and manipulating him in exile.
justice: connected with piety, religion, and gratitude. Fighting for what’s right and good. Tommy is always about doing the best possible thing and remaining true in his stance. Asking Punz for help before the final disc confrontation is an instance of piety as well.
temperance: associated with meekness, humility, and conscience. Maybe what people will assume he doesn’t fit into, but he definitely does: telling Tubbo he’s his sidekick in the vault, forgiving Eret in the museum.
fortitude: patience and perserverance. This can be seen in his builds, in the time he put into them: the vape tower (where church prime was founded), l’manburg, big innit hotel, even every cobblestone tower.
Another thing I would add here is that Tommy was not affected by the Egg’s influence, implying he’s virtuous enough to reject evil.
3. Miracle one (Beatification)
This is where the miracles come in. The thing is, they have to happen after the individual’s death, and Tommy is very much alive. However, I would consider getting resurrected to be a very big miracle. This is where playing with canon comes in. We know the Dream got the revive book from Schlatt, but we don’t know where he originally got it from. I like the idea Schlatt got it from DreamXD somehow, so resurrection would’ve been through god, in a roundabout way.
At this stage, Tommy would become Blessed, and would be called so (the abbreviation Bl. would be used in front of his name, making him Blessed TommyInnit or Bl. TommyInnit).
4. Miracle two (Canonization)
This is where it gets tricky. Tommy is alive again, and to become a saint, miracles can only happen after death. One argument could be that being revived is big enough to sway the second miracle requirement, much like martyrdom, or Tommy bringing Ghostbur to pandora’s vault only for Wilbur to be revived could also work. The latter though is a bit more of a stretch than the former.
So, is Tommy a saint? Technically, no. He’s well on his way though, he just needs one more miracle to happen after his final final canon death (whenever that is). For now he is Blessed TommyInnit, and he is virtuous, good, and holy.
