July 8 to 23, 1994 former chemical engineering PhD researcher astronaut Leroy Chiao flew his first spaceflight mission onboard space shuttle Columbia during the STS-65 IML mission.
Leroy Chiao was mission specialist on the IML - International Microgravity Laboratory mission which carried the European SpaceLab in the cargo bay of the space shuttle orbiter. Chiao conducted 26 hours spacewalk time, served as Chief of the Astronaut Office EVA Branch and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Russian.
Note Chiao was wearing his personal Rolex GMT-master Pepsi pilot watch, which he wore on his four spaceflight missions, three on different space shuttles (Columbia, Endeavour and Discovery) and on Soyuz TMA-5 to the ISS - International Space Station. In this way, Chiao’s Rolex GMT-master Pepsi accumulated 229 days 8 hours space-flown time, becoming a record holder for the Rolex timepiece spending the most time in Low Earth Orbit.
Gemini X veteran and Apollo 11 Command Module Pilot Michael Collins photographed during centrifuge training in the Flight Acceleration Facility at the Manned Spaceflight Center in Houston Texas.
This gondola could seat three occupants in order to train G-forces resistance astronauts would face during launch & re-entry phases of a spaceflight mission.
Note Michael Collins was wearing his personal Rolex Turn-O-Graph wristwatch. Since early Gemini training, e.g. as backup for the Gemini VII mission in 1965, Collins has been photographed wearing his Rolex Turn-O-Graph. Best known images are the May 30, 1969 roll out of the Apollo 11 Saturn V launch vehicle and the LIFE photo-series taken at the Collins’ family home where the astronaut demonstrated his hobby of painting artworks. The Rolex Turn-O-Graph was the first Rolex with a turnable bezel and was popular with pilots as a navigation tool before the launch of the GMT-master. In fact, Rolex used the Turn-O-Graph to develop toolwatches, such as the Submariner and GMT-master… which we know were also personal favorites with both astronauts & cosmonauts!
Still on top 🔥
