‘Roses’ is a song from Lynda Dawn and Bes Kept that featured on
‘New Tangents in Kampala, London & Nairobi Vol. 1’, an album that was released at the start of July. ‘New Tangents in Kampala, London & Nairobi Vol. 1’ is an album that was created when eight artists from Kenya, Uganda and the UK spent a week in Nairobi together making music and exploring ways of manipulating and using soul music, combining it with jazz and hip-hop in places. As a whole the group are called ‘Extra Soul Perception’ and are composed of
Faizal Mostrixx, Hibotep, K15, Karun, Labdi, Lex Amor, Lynda Dawn and Maxwell Owen. ‘Roses’ is the third song on the album.
‘Roses’ and Lynda Dawn’s involvement in ‘Extra Soul Perception’ comes after her debut EP ‘First Light’ was released last year to much critical acclaim. ‘Roses’ retains some of that ‘80s funk feel that was present in ‘First Light’, with a funk-infused baseline that drives the whole song, as well as hefty synths. However, Lynda Dawn’s evocative vocals are the star of the piece as they soar, soulful and ethereal above the synths and create a laid-back, summery feel.
The entire album is really interesting and the blends of genres work really well. If you’re a fan of jazz or soul then its definitely worth a listen.
