Mara stared out the window of the university library, watching as rain poured down. It thundered over the high roof, boxing people in and forcing them to actually study or write… or whatever you did in a university library. Mara didn’t really know. She had just barely graduated with her GED, not doing well in an academic setting. Her mother had laughed it off, pushing her daughter further into the burglary circuit, until she died.

Mara wiped unwelcome tears from her eyes, staring back out at the quad. A few people were crossing, but they had heavy raincoats or umbrellas. There was no way she could snag the jewels with so many people watching.

The sounds of people were unnerving her, making her want to bolt or tune them out with her own voice. She chastised herself, remembering how she was blown in Paris a couple of weeks ago by that stupid hitter, but it worked out in the end since she got the Vermeer.

The drumming sound started lulling her to sleep, but Mara had to keep her eyes on the Lotus Tiara in the display case in case someone else had the audacity to steal it. Mara did, but she hadn’t planned that the rain would be so bad that it would be almost impossible to leave.

“I just gotta wait until everyone leaves, wheel it back to storage and..” she trailed off, stealing a few looks around her to make sure that not-brandon wasn’t there to steal her loot.

Doors slammed on the main floor below Mara, perking her ears. People were still entering the library with this weather? She peeked over the railing slightly, trying to see the people that came in, but there was only a wet mop of brown hair wandering around the lobby.

Sitting back down, she stared back at the tiara, shining in its protective case.

“Finally, just a case for me. No deals. No cash. Just diamonds.”

The whisper was ended with a quiet sigh as Mara rested her chin on her arms. The gems glittered and danced in the warm, flickering light of the ancient library. She loved jewelry. So much. Jewelry was not something Mara sold. She hoarded it.

It just looked so pretty. The gems just mesmerized her whirling brain, calming her to the point of sleep. There was a huge collection of famous and “lost” jewellery that she had stolen over the years, just sitting in a small safe house.

Mara stared at the sparkling jewels, almost falling asleep.

Brennan almost laughed at the absurdity of the scene he beheld.

It was that thief girl, and the was forlornly looking at the Lotus Tiara. She actually looked… kinda cute. Long, no longer blonde hair, was caught up in a thick hair clip and her thin arms were swimming in a heavy sweater to block out the chill.

Her eyelids drooped dramatically, prompting Brennan to swiftly shake out his hair and stride over to her. He had to look his best for this reoccurring threat to his lively hood. She was pretty after all.

The wooden chair creaked dramatically as he plopped into it, scaring the girl. Eyes snapping open, she kicked him in the leg and smacked him across the face.

“What the hell do you want?” she asked incredulously when she got her wits about her again. Brennan smiled and raised an eyebrow, trying to hide his wince. This girl hit hard.

“You here to steal anything?” he said, reaching down to rub his injured shin. the girl ran a tongue over her teeth, shaking her head.

“Nothing, Brandon,” she said wrinkling her nose and turning to dig something out of her bag. When her hand returned, Brennan saw a flash metal, like a lock pick set.

The girl flicked her wrist, throwing a plastic card in front of him.

“That would be you, yeah?” she asked quietly, leaning back in her own seat and mirroring his previous smug expression. Brennan snatched up the fake ID and stuffed it in his pocket, thankful for the return of his current alias.

“No, but I don’t even know a name to associate with you,” he said, glancing at the tiara she had refocused on, “I could call you ‘jewelry girl’ since you’re so obsessed with it.”

“I’m not obsessed,” she argued, but still looked back at the shining jewels in front of her.

“You were whispering junk about diamonds. I guess diamonds are a girls best friend.”

“Okay, that was tacky,” the girl turned, an accusatory finger in his direction, “And my name is Mara. My actual name, not some fake thing like Brandon.”

Brennan raised his eyebrows at her, but fiddled with his thumbs. He didn’t really want to reveal his identity to someone, but it was most likely that it was a lie.

“How do i even know that’s you’re real name?” he asked, crossing his arms angrily. She was lying to him. There was really no reason for her to give him his real name. But the girl had the audacity to look offended.

“Well,” she said, growing angry, “That is one of the most rude things i have ever heard! Is there any reason i wouldn’t tell you my real name.”

She jolted out of her seat, dragging her bag across the table, giving Brennan enough time to jab his hand into her bag and grab the small case inside. She looked back at him just after he hid the picks beneath his legs, then whipped around and headed downstairs, forfeiting her job.

He knew they would encounter each other again, and this would make it much more probable.

Brennan smiled to himself, staring over at the sparkle of the Lotus Tiara. He knew, for a fact, that it wouldn’t be there the next morning.

ROYAL TIARA - Fleur de Lys Tiara

This tiara, considered the most important diadem of the Spanish royal jewels collection, called “La Buena” (The Good one) and only worn by the Queens of Spain. It was a wedding present from King Alfonso XIII to his bride, Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg. Made in 1906 by Ansorena with more than 500 diamonds set in platinum, it features the Fleur de Lys, the Bourbon’s emblem.

From the beginning, this diadem became one of the favorites of the young Queen, who was married wearing it and chose it for her first photo session as Queen of Spain in 1906.  Shortly after her wedding the Queen opened the tiara and started wearing it in its current form. Queen Victoria Eugenia used the tiara throughout her life. She was photographed and painted with the Fleur de Lys on numerous occasions.

In her will, the late Queen Victoria Eugenia left the Fleur de Lys for the exclusive use of the Queen of Spain. When Juan Carlos was proclaimed King in 1975, his mother, the tiara was passed to the new Queen, Sofía of Greece and Denmark. The first time Queen Sofía wore the tiara was in 1983 during a State Visit from the King and Queen of Sweden.

Queen Letizia received the Queen Tiara when her husband became King Felipe IX of Spain in 2014. She debuted the tiara for the first time during gala dinner for the President and First Lady of Argentina in 2017.
