Simon and Baz in “Carry On” give me Naruto/Sasuke vibes

Sasuke protecc. Sasuke usually does the meal prepping… Naruto tried.
This though. Someone reblogged my last post and I want to talk about this for a bit. With all due respect to them.
One of the major reasons I even made this blog was to convey that nothing Kishimoto did was accidental. Before making this blog, I went on several social media sites to see what fans in general thought about Sasuke and Naruto’s bond. A lot of them outright denied it. Homophobia, lack of comprehension, I get it. But I found out that a lot of them seem to think the romantic nature of their bond was unintentional. Since it is shounen. This drove me to talk about Naruto on a credible platform for this type of discussion. Hence Tumblr.
At first, their bond around which the story revolves, confused me as well. I had only recently started watching shounen seriously, Naruto inspired me to read manga for the very first time. So I didn't have much of a frame of reference. But I came around. No man. Sasuke and Naruto’s bond was not accidental. Like it is simply not POSSIBLE. Nope, Nada, No way.
1) Please understand that that’s not how studios work. No studio in the world would invest so heavily in ‘accidents’. A fuckton of effort goes behind these projects. Every single dialogue, frame, cut, sound effect goes under multilayered scrutiny. Please give some credit to the producers of the show/manga, they aren’t idiots or spring chickens. They know already how their show/creation is going to be perceived by the audience. It is all part of the visual language and narrative, it's their business to understand this stuff. They also understand what the story is about, no matter what they say in interviews. We all know for a fact that they would never admit it in public that they showed a gay love story in the manga or anime. They are simply going to cash in on the hen that lays golden eggs that came to be Naruto.
2) The biggest proof of this is the openings and endings. Who do you think commissioned them in the first place?? If the studio hadn’t known, they would not have allowed the blatantly romantic ops and eds to feature in the anime. Not. A. Chance. Even if they commissioned the ops and eds to some other studio, which does look like it, they would have given a brief to that other studio. Not the other way round. Upon which the other studio would have come up with concept/storyboard/songs/lyrics etc to be approved by the main studio. That’s how things are done in the industry. Was it queerbaiting, fanservice? Sure it was. There’s no other explanation. Why wouldn’t they milk the cash cow? But please do not delude yourself that they didn’t know what they were doing. Don’t insult their intelligence as well as your own.
3) Kishimoto also knew what he was doing. No, he didn’t write InoSaku with homoerotic undertones. He is a confirmed misogynist, I don’t think he cares (or knows how to) about writing lesbian women or lesbian relationships. Ship whoever but please don’t claim that InoSaku is canon. It is not. Drawing parallels between SNS and InoSaku is a ridiculous idea to begin with. Kishi showed Ino and Sakura’s rivalry/friendship as a counterpart to male friendships in the manga. They are the only consistent female friendship dynamic in the entire manga. The level of development is shallow and written from the perspective of a misogynistic man, Ino and Sakura literally fight over a boy who doesn't even know they exist btw, which ends in them breaking up. It is not accidental either, if you think there are homoerotic undertones to them, that’s your projection. Which it totally fine. But the idea Kishi wrote them that way is simply not feasible.
They are as straight as they come. Some fans seem to think their catty behaviour with each other is homoerotic. No. Lesbian cinema made by real lesbian creators makes it clear that lesbian women generally don’t put each other down to come close. That kind of trope does not work in lesbian media. Why? Because lesbians are women. Their socio-political intersection is in being a part of at least two oppressed communities, one being a woman, another being gay. They are even more marginalized than gay men. In serious lesbian media at least, which is not written by cishet men, they bond by understanding and empathizing with each other, not by playing by the rules misogynist men have created for them.
The only other dynamic with homoerotic undertones in this manga is HashiMada.
4) I can’t stress it enough that Kishimoto obviously knew what he was doing. Yes, all shounen typically have strong male bonds. But none of them have the kind of dynamic that Naruto and Sasuke have. I wasn’t sure so I discussed it with more seasoned anime fans and they agreed. I have discussed this at length in my blog, and the fact is not only Kishimoto knew that he was writing a romantic relationship between two boys, he somehow convinced the studio or the publishers as well. Who doesn’t want money? Well, the least we can admit is that quite a lot of fans are convinced that they were written as brothers or friends, so Kishimoto actually succeeded. He successfully wrote a gay love story in shounen. Even if fans think that their bond is suspect, it wouldn’t matter because it is shounen. It actually kinda worked in their favor too, Kishi being so shrewd about it. Did he have difficulties writing the bond? Sure.
Even this interviewer dude is fishing for info on the exact nature of their bond, but Kishi is being evasive. Like always when he talks about them. Would he admit the true nature of their relationship to the public, not a chance in hell. Anyway what the fuck does ‘more brothers than blood brothers’ even mean??
It’s a form of catch 22 situation. Shounen can’t feature gay relationships but Naruto did, despite being shounen, but it will never be official (God, I hope that changes, wishful thinking, whatever). The producers could say - Who’s gonna believe you? Also, who cares? It’s already been done. They are married to women with children now. Fuck off and just watch Boruto.
That was always the plan, after the idea of Boruto was conceived. The canon pairs exist only because of money to be earned in this genre. That is the plain and simple truth of it. No point overthinking it.
In conclusion, the claim that Kishimoto couldn’t have written such a ‘homoerotic queer dynamic if he tried’ is simply not feasible. He tried, he tried so hard. And he succeeded.
The entire reason why he was so thoroughly consistent with Naruto and Sasuke’s dynamic, and their dynamic with their canon pairs (Hinata and Sakura) throughout, ie Naruto part 1, Shippuden and largely even Boruto, is because he knew what he was doing.
He developed their bond so thoroughly, so cleverly, that its been years and fans are still not able to move on. The reason we are all here is testament to that. There are no happy accidents like that man. That’s delusion or simply a misunderstanding.
Kishi maybe a sellout, but he isn’t an idiot. Neither are the studios.
We love squishy froggies 🥺❤️🐸
