#service provider Tumblr posts

  • I think sometimes people forget that service providers aren’t JUST the service they provide to you, but are also real human beings with real feelings and lives of their own. Every time I come across a situation that fucks me up as a service provider, I’m just going to reply and add it to the list of friendly reminders here.

Feel free to add your own instances in the comments if you want.

Friendly Reminder That Service Providers are Human And:

-Have personal lives that can affect our output speeds despite our best efforts.
-Are not obligated to answer you at all hours of the day and night.
-Are not obligated to notify you that a family emergency has occurred while still in the middle of experiencing said emergency.
-Can have mental health issues that make it difficult to work with other human beings, and may shut down or interact minimally if your behaviors are triggering.
-Fucking need to sleep sometimes to maintain their health.
-Deserve to be paid fairly for their time, expertise, and hard work.
-Get physically sick and need time to recuperate.
-Deserve to be treated with common human decency, even when they make mistakes that frustrate you, and most especially when they are subject to circumstances wildly outside their control.
-Can have technical difficulties that slow their work down.
-Deserve to be able to attend funerals and other important family events without being made to feel that they should be responsive to you during those times.
-Deserve to get to enjoy time with the people they love without work interruptions.
-Deserve to get to have the occasional sanity break where work isn’t haunting them every second of every day.
-Shouldn’t have to neglect the important people in their lives to be at your beck and call 24/7.
-Deserve to have their boundaries respected.

I went to a house, you know we do it regularly. After six months, we go back to the same community, maybe different households or it can be the same household. So when I got back to the household, I asked about one woman because we were familiar with each other. She already had nine children, and was in the process of delivering the tenth one. After the delivery, the blood couldn’t stop. They didn’t take her to the hospital, and she’s gone, which is so sad.

    I wept from that.

I always wanted to be a gynecologist but as a clinician you are helping one person at a time. However with a more public health or global health perspective, you can have so much more impact to your community. That is why I’m in training right now at the London School of Tropical Medicine and I started working for International Youth Alliance for Family Planning — to use the research that can be conducted by young people to be used for evidence-based advocacy, which we have been doing since 2013. Nothing about us, without us.

If God permits and provides the means, I would work with my future husband to help organize my family. One of the things that people don’t understand about family planning is that it can really help people to ensure that they have the means to be able to take care of themselves as a couple but also take care of their children. So if God permits, I would hopefully have a husband that also understands this, and I’d be able to work with him to better organize my family.

  • Aliou Gadiaga, Nutrition and Random Data Collection Research Assistant, PMA2020

    Burkina Faso

In the Burkinabe context, we are facing poverty, we are facing underdevelopment. Therefore, in the health sector, it is not going anywhere, in the education sector, it is not going anywhere either. So, I am really very happy to be able to monitor health indicators and especially sexual and reproductive health using mobile technology. In providing the indicators, we can guide decision-makers [and] policy, in making the right decisions for the well-being of all these populations.

Within the PMA platform, we collect data on the socio-demographic characteristics of households, on aspects of water, hygiene and household living conditions. There is also data collection at the health facility level. In the field of nutrition, we collect information on the different interventions that are being implemented in the field. Thus, by comparing all these data, we bring the information that is very useful given the reality that the rural and urban populations are living in. The various indicators allow appropriate decision-making to carry out a strategic plan against the problems facing this population, especially in terms of health, the health of women and children under the age of five.

I want for everyone to know their rights. If if you ask a woman in Kaduna, especially in my area, “Do you know your rights?”, all she can say is, “right to what?” They don’t know whether they have the right to education, to space their births, to even give birth if they want to. So at least enlighten our women. Let them know their rights, and let them know they have to do what they want to do.

  • Isiru Sophie, PMA2020 Resident Enumerator, Makerere University School of Public Health

    Uganda

Over my years working with PMA2020, people have come to open up. They’ve seen it as an opportunity. As a resident enumerator, I’m closer to them than the health workers at the health center. So when I’m there collecting information from them, whatever issues they raise to me, I’m able to refer them to the health centers, and they go confidently because they have heard it from me. I am a resident in the community where I collect data. People receive me very well. I’m their own, so it’s very easy for them to open up to me, when it comes to collecting information with regards to family planning and contraceptive use.

People are nervous to talk about family planning because of stigma, so I really have to build a lot of rapport with these people first. I tell them, “I am your own. I am from here. I am a woman like you. I share the culture with you. What you go through is what I go through. So I am here to collect information from you. Would you help our government make policies?” I also normally give them a local story, saying, “You’ve been selected to be testing salt.” It’s like when you cook in a big pot—you take a little, and you taste. So they are acting as that testing salt. You do not drink the whole soup, but you take a little and you’re able to tell if it’s perfect. All of them are cooks, so that’s the best example I can give them. I tell them that they’re privileged to give us their voice, and they open up.

We cannot separate population, health, and environment, because without any of those three, everything is affected. If you have a large population, your health is affected, and your environment is affected also. There’s that law of supply and demand. When you have a large family size, then you have to work harder or even work illegally by cutting trees and fishing illegally just to feed your children. But when you are planning your family, you’ll know how many children you can afford to send to school. And when you have a large family size, you have [children with] nutrient deficiency. I’m so sad for the environment. We only have two main resources here: coastal and upland. Either or both of them will be damaged if [communities] have large families and have nothing else to depend on.
