I need to learn to sew. I’m tired of staring at cute dresses that are too much money for me to have.
A new piece I need to finish lol
If you have a limited wardrobe and cook a lot at home, please invest in aprons. Aprons, smocks, and other protective garments will save your wardrobe. They’re not the province of grandma anymore. You can get them as frilly or as tailored as you’d like. Same with apron sewing patterns/drafting advice.
I do have a breakfast apron set that was my grandmother’s - it’s a half apron (yellow and white gingham, white trim and a duck on the pocket) and placemats (white, bordered with yellow gingham with a yellow duck in one corner) and yellow gingham napkins.
I don’t use that one that often, though, because my spouse is not a morning person and apparently that much cheerful gingham paired with adorbs ducks is Too Much.
But - save your clothes, wear an apron.
If you want something somewhat enveloping, I recommend 1920s or earlier styles. They were serious about coverage when doing laundry was a giant pain in the ass.
(Side note: if you find yourself somewhere without ready access to laundry facilities and you’d like to go longer between washing your tops, use dress shields. They come in a variety of styles (reusable or disposable) and Kleinerts has been manufacturing them for ages. They pin or stick in the armhole of your shirt and keep sweat away from your clothes. You can also make your own or even use a couple of panty liners in a pinch.)

Here’s my finished project for my office, my progress patch!
It’s uneven, messy, lumpy, and weird and I love it. It was a fun, low-key project and I think that’s good to do every once in a while. I’m not very good at sewing or finishing things but I did both here in an attempt to improve on them and it’s not perfect but it is progress :)
…with another apron. I swear this will be the final one! But I thought while I’m at it, might as well make one for my drawing/painting classes (that won’t take place for a while still).
Also these are great projects for using up fabrics from your stash. I had leftovers of the roses fabric and no other use for the (off-white) cotton. The lace is also cotton and not something I would use for l*lita or any other project …except maybe curtains? tablecloths?!
I’m going to be honest, I’m not feeling this one too much. The base fabric is much too white (even though it is very cleary not white in comparison with a truly white fabric).
I hope that I can throw this in a dye bath and -since the base fabric is 100% cotton and the roses fabric is a cotton-poly blend- it will make the whole look more harmonious.
And -yes, this is Butterick B5474 View C!
First quilt complete!
Here’s my issue.
Sometimes, I can sew 3 or 4 garments in a week, which is great for me and not my issue!! I love the feeling of completing something new whether it be a whole new pattern or just a new garment from a pattern I’ve used before.
Here’s a picture of the current commission I’m working on.
I occasionally take on commissioned projects, I’ve found it is NOT for me and my hobby, so I limit the amount of projects I do for other people. Why? I hear you ask, you can get paid for doing what you love doing, that’s anybody’s dream job! Well, I’ll tell you…
I put any money making projects to the top of the pile, this pushes my passion projects to the side even if they are a work in progress. (I need to make the money to buy more fabric, right?!) This causes me to not find the time to sew like I would if I was really excited about wearing it. I turn into the chief of procrastination. My output goes drastically down.
But why can’t I just get on with it so I can get back selfish sewing? Well, you have the added pressure of this is what someone else is going to received. They are going to be able to go through every stitch with a fine tooth comb. Even though I’m a pretty confident sewist now, I still know it’s impossible to be the best. I also enjoy throwing caution to the wind and sewing how I like, I don’t usually care if things are perfect but when someone else is paying… you have to concentrate on the little details. It’s impossible to just jump into something giving you pressure if your not in the right headspace.
Don’t get me wrong, I do love making people smile once they’ve received their item(s). But I need to get in the mood. Since I’ve been back working all the time, there’s been less opportunity for the mood to take me.
I hope that getting this out into a public space will help me get through my mental block and have me on my way again. I’d love to know everyone else’s flaws and blocks in their hobbies?!

If I have some spare time today I’m going to do some “back” yoga later.
Gotta finish up some mask pre orders, make the wedding masks, and god willing start mending B’s ball gowns and finish her Anastasia jacket.
Lucky for me G slept in a little bit so I’m super on track with my schedule today (aka I got to finish all of my workouts). Looks like today’s going to be productive!
