You ever have one of those days where you have one or two little household chores to do, but then once you start, you discover there's more to do before you can really consider that one thing done? One day this summer, longer ago than I care to admit, I was about to do a load of laundry. Seeing that there were some pretty nasty rust stains on my ironing board cover, I decided to throw that in as well. On taking the cover off, I saw that the stains were in part due to the paint chipping off the board's metal frame, which was now rusting. No matter. I'd touch up the chipped portions with some nail polish while the cover washes and dries. Grab a damp washcloth to wipe it down and... Chip away huge patches of the remaining paint with a gentle swipe. Okay. Okay. So we lay down newspaper and spray paint the whole damn thing. That was a lot of work but at least it's done and the dryer just dinged. .... And the ironing board cover was so old that just a normal wash and tumble dry tore the paper thin fabric to shreds.
So thus *gestures, exhausted, at new cover made of a sturdy twill*
Hopefully in twenty years when I inevitably have to do this again, I will remember the classic blunder I made this time, which is being so concerned with making a nice snug fit that you kinda forget you have to get the damn thing on in the first place.
i am thinking about jack zimmermann with secret piercings
#like got his ears pierced in 11th grade as a lol #doesn't want to wear earrings for hockey and doesn't really like them anymore #(because they remind him of the person he used to be and he's not sure he likes that kid very much) #so he just doesn't wear them #but he can't let them just close up so every night he sleeps with a pair of studs in #and maybe one night shitty comes into his room real late and jack forgot to take them out and shitty notices #and jack's expecting it to be something because jack always expects everything to turn into Something #and shitty's just like 'oh sick i didn't know you had those they suit you' #and jack doesn't know what to say so he just says thanks #like i think maybe he was a little drunk when he got his ears pierced #it was a dumb kids with a sewing needle kind of time and he regretted it in the morning but there was still... something #idk this isn't well articulated #but yeah #i love the idea that jack treats a lot of stuff like it'd be a big deal if anyone found out and then when shitty finds out he's just like #oh yeah cool whatever rock on man! #anyway there's also some jackparse in here because they pierced each other's ears #he also has his nipples pierced because i said so
Wow, it’s been awhile. My lack of posts over the last few months is puzzling even to me. I suppose it’s a consequence of the pandemic. During the lockdown, I found myself lacking motivation as I struggled to find a new routine for my days. I never intended to stop writing and blogging. It just sort of happened. But since being vaccinated, I’m feeling more energized and hopeful. Do you feel it…
i should be doing assignments, but alas, am on my period so im just curled up in a ball thinking about monsters and spooky romance
#tj talks #my head was POUNDING all last night and then this morning at wokr #i literally have so many thinga i must sew but...am tired n hurty #thimking about vapire lady and werewolf man...true lov <3 #also mnay monsters
because i am an absolute asshole when it comes to assigning myself over-ambitious projects, I decided to attend the rennaisance faire this year as Jerry P’th’ghan Nimblefingers, a character that is so well known and universally beloved that I honestly feel embarrassed for you if you haven’t heard of him. as those of you who are familiar with the character know, however, the pressure to get this right for all the Jerryheads out there was huge.
i am kidding. Jerry was my first d&d character and as a result maybe 15 people max on earth have ever heard of him, literally none of whom would be able to describe his appearance with a gun to their head.
Whatever, I wanted to be Jerry, or like… genderswap Jerry I guess. Jerry’s a great old one warlock whose eldritch blast is canonically an awful tentacle, and who, per the mini-fig of him i once painted, really leans into the purple/green/neutrals color scheme:
So I decided to try sewing a purple/green/black waistcoat and refurbishing some old boots to match for my costume. I found this rad pattern on etsy that i decided i’d try to tackle:
This was a genuinely great pattern that happened to also be an absolute bitch to construct. Like, it had all the things that one might expect would trip a beginning costume maker up: Extremely fitted? Steel boning? 22 eyelets that had to be installed? Requires a perfectly constructed lining AND shell? Yep, this pattern has everything.
On the upside, I managed to find some truly tentacle-evoking fabric, which was initially very fun:
But as it turned out I very quickly got sick of the fabric, because until I’d finished, my workshop looked uh:
The boots were also a lot of effort, all things considered, but frankly way easier than the waistcoat. I grabbed these used leather Steve Madden boots off Poshmark for 15$
then i grabbed some acrylic paint specifically for leather and got to work painting:
anyway, sorry in advance for the shitty photoshopping i did on my phone to blur/remove the innocent rennaisance faire attendees from the background, buuuuuuuuuuut here’s the final product (which I had laced VERY POORLY at the time the photo was taken)
The top and pants were last minute target purchases; I ran out of time to finish sewing the skirt and top i’d planned for this, along with quite a few of my planned decorative accents, so that’ll be a project for next year. Still, when you consider that in September 2020, exactly one year before i started on this project, this was where I was at in terms of sewing ability?
