psa for birds in oregon
oh man, feeling like an idiot :-(
the cute little dumb birds with no sense of self preservation? yeah apparently they were acting so lethargic and strange cause they were all sick from salmonella poisoning. it's spread from other sick birds through poop accumulating in and around the popular feeders and water dishes, and pine siskins (the ones i'd noticed to be acting this way) are especially susceptible to it.
this article goes a more in depth but these kinds of reports seem to happen regularly at this time of year in oregon. in the past few days i'd found two dead in my yard without any visible injuries to them, but my dumbass just didn't connect the dots until now despite it being concerning.
it's recommended to deep clean all feeders and baths with 9 parts water to 1 part bleach, and to not put them back up for 2 weeks to help contain and stop the spread.
im not sure yet if this is exclusive to oregon, but i thought i'd make a post on it anyway since it's definitely a danger right now and i want to give people a heads up on what to keep an eye out for in case any of you live round here too.
please do your best to keep our birdies safe & healthy
