I’m at 3x05 of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The parallel between Azula and Zuko’s sibling bond vs Sokka and Katara’s is staggering.
Katara and Sokka have a healthy dynamic. They tease eachother, they get on eachother’s nerves, sometimes they genuinely get angry at one another. But there’s love and loyalty and a sense of truly wanting the best for eachother. If the other was in trouble, the squabbles would be dropped immediately to help.
Then there’s Zuko and Azula. That dynamic was poisoned by Ozai from nearly the beginning, which is unbelievably sad. Ozai pitted them against eachother and (although idk if it’s true) Azula’s convinced their mother loved Zuko more. They see eachother as competition, as the enemy, they lack the faith that Katara and Sokka freely place in eachother. It doesn’t seem like there was ever time when they just got to be siblings.
