So I decided to procrastinate by turning my oldest unfinished comic into a fic, but that that wasn’t good enough for my stupid brain so I also had to finish this little doodle which had been sitting at the bottom of the page.
9″ × 12″; watercolor, markers, and pastels on toned paper; 5 hours
The WIP has officially been completed! 🥳 [previous 1, 2]
Based on John William Waterhouse’s c. 1900 painting of the same name.
Once again twisting gendered archetypes by featuring Jonathan Randall as another seductive, malevolent female figure. 😈
I darkened Waterhouse’s landscape with the aforementioned sea of blood, as well as an eclipse skyline.
I also replaced the siren’s lyre with the flogger and vial of oil of lavender—representing Jonathan’s dual tools of pain and pleasure, which ultimately prove irresistible to Jamie who drowns helplessly below.
I intentionally evoked the imagery of the second and third Wentworth flashbacks, wherein Claire and Jonathan’s identities gradually blur in Jamie’s mind, which Jonathan embraces as a means to further mental manipulation.
As such, I’ve decided to count this piece towards my @outlanderbingo challenge, under the loosely interpreted square “Making the Other Forget” (updated card below the cut)
Finally, for those interested in my process, Ive summarized them below, accompanied by another time-lapse gif:
