4Imagine knowing Cyrus when he’s in his beginning college years and he’s motivated and a little introverted but he’s pretty okay and still smiles and will excitedly tell you in hushed whispers about the stars and the gods and you hear him laugh and it’s the most beautiful noise coming from such a broken kid.
He still falters a little when he talks about his family but he wants them to accept him and uptalks his parent’s achievements and wakes you up at 3 am to talk about the latest scientific journal that's been published regarding life in space. Snack foods stashed in his backpack that he never seems to run out of, his grand plans for Galactic Energy, how he’s going to flip the energy industry on its head and do something great. Sending him out on awkward dates you set up for him and laughing as he wrinkles his nose and talks about how he couldn’t stand the way they kept tapping nails on the table.
Imagine watching him lose his grip slowly, being at the opening of GE, assuring him not to be nervous about his first investor expo, seeing his eyes scan for his parents. Imagine seeing him the next day, hungover and tired and a little broken now, seeing him turn to his books and lose that happy motivation he once had.
Then, imagine watching him become what he is now. Smiles no more, laughs are rare, he’s so closed off from everything around him. He hangs out with you when you ask but all his conversations are about these damned chains and gods and whether or not they care and how he bet he could do a better job.
You see glimpses of him in his oversized bags of doritos and his gaming nights and the way his eyes glimmer when he sees the stars and the way he discusses research he’s published but that excited boy you once knew has been murdered and desecrated by the world. And now you aren’t sure if he’s even the same person.
