Whenever I see right wing Americans ranting about socialism and/or communism it makes me think of this Monty Python skit
Communist Party of Switzerland, “Workers follow the example of Soviet Russia!”, poster in support of the Russian revolution, 1921.
Since nobody seems to get why “medicare for all” is bad, let me tell you a story. Last year, I went on vacation to Cuba. When I got there, the communists searched me and found my Kaiser Permanente pharmacy card. The crime for smuggling private healthcare into socialism, is death. They brought me to Fidel Castro, who shot me. This is why I’m voting for Bloomberg who would never allow that to happen in the US.
Bernie quoting Rev. Dr. MLK on “socialism for the rich” vs “socialism for the poor” made my heart sing!!!!! No more massive bailouts for fat cat bankers that ruin our economy!!! Our taxes should go to helping the people that need it most!!!
Many Americans are hyper-concerned about the negative effects that Socialism could have on our economy
If Socialism is undertaken within a functioning system Democracy and the Democracy is left intact, the people can self-correct if things go wrong
As long as authority is not assigned in such a way that undermines the ability of the Democratic system to function, dangerous or ineffective social programs can be undone and recuperative measures can be taken if necessary
Grossly unequal wealth accumulation, on the other hand, cannot be undone, and it also undermines systems of Democracy
Once wealth is assigned and accumulated to the level that significant mobility is gained, such as the mobility to switch assets into different forms and move money or other assets into various jurisdictions to evade authority, that wealth cannot be taken back
Free market theory describes no mechanism which can correct this problem, at least not on any practical timescale
This is one vastly understated reason why the accumulation of wealth in the hands of a small minority of people is so problematic
Unlike a Democratically instituted social program, the accumulation of wealth at such large scales such that it becomes out of the reach of the people cannot be corrected
Overheard in the cafeteria at work today: “Socialist are just wannabe commies.”
Thank you for your thoughtful and nuanced view, Joseph McCarthy. 😒
I would go as far to say I support Trump.
As a libertarian-esque dude, I have always leaned towards republican candidates, so it’s not that surprising. And with most of this year’s string of democratic candidates, you can’t exactly fault me.
However, I would be lying if one of the Democrats this year hasn’t caught my eye a bit. It’s the weirdest thing and hasn’t occured before.
For one reason that smoothed this, they were one of the candidates who openly supported capitalism (with an asterisk) and denounced socialism in the Las Vegas debate. Which is always nice because that essentially is a middle finger to Bernie when you’re on a debate stage with him.
Who knew a democratic candidate could ever curry consideration from me.
