Rare are such authors who write a story so completely that the reader feels completely immersed in the characters, their emotions sync up with yours and you feel you're becoming the story instead of reading it.
If you like watching crime shows, be prepared to read a story that feels like one.
“No,” she insisted in disbelief. “He was a sweetheart.” Right. He frowned and noted the shift in her stance. Her arms tightened around her middle and her right eyelid spasmed. She was lying.
SEE!!! Doesn't this seem like something straight out of a murder mystery show/movie!! The scenes, the characters are described so well and the insight given into their emotions and reasoning is just *chef's kiss*. They're written so multifacetedly with complex emotions - with an effort and an eye for detail that you can make out, generally is misplaced in fanfiction.
Louis is a jaded, lonely and an incredibly intelligent detective with past trauma of his own that foreshadows his decisions in the latter half of the story. Hardened and weathered over the years, he has lost a piece of himself he’s trying to find in his cases. Harry is the mysterious bartender/club owner who Louis gets strangely attached to, for all the right or wrong reasons.
“Would you like some bread?” the boy asked, putting the plastic lid — what the fuck was the point of a cardboad bowl, only to have the top made of plastic? — on and pushing it towards him. “We have a gluten-free option.”
Small details like this take you out of the story and let you gain perspective on the character's personalities while remaining so immersed as if this is happening with you/to you.
He had forgotten to cap back one of his cheap pens, which would have rolled to the floor had it not been held back by an old eraser. He wasn’t messy by nature, but he wasn’t also the cleanest, and in the gentle chaos he created, he understood himself.
I will always remain in awe of such smart, subtle yet profound writing, that this author always delivers!
The pacing of the story is perfect, not too fast that it seems like you missed something, and not too slow that the reader feels bored or their mind starts to wander. The relationship between Harry and Louis, how they fall in love, is just so painfully slow yet perfect, they're adorable in this fic.
I won't be posting any more snippets of the fic from the later chapters: I don't want to spoil anything, especially in this fic, where literally every sentence, every chapter has a revelation of it's own. The actions of the characters never come out of a blind turn, though you might not expect it, you will find them justified in your head. If you've read the prompt- you might have your own suspicions how the story ends, but at the risk of sounding cheesy as fuck, it's not the end, rather the journey that matters!
All in all, this fic is a wonderful, addicting and should be made into a real book!!!!
