3If Spaniards are described as fiery and passionate. The Portuguese are best compared to water or even ice.
Spaniards don’t hide or restrain their anger. They shout and shake their hands and feet, they let you know how much they are angry and how they feel about it.
The Portuguese prefer the cold approach. The silence, the cold stares, they let their quiet revolt do the speaking.
One historical event happened when the Spanish Monarchs came to visit Lisbon in 1882. Though they were well received by the Portuguese Royals, the people were still furious with the Spanish intervention and invasion of Porto in 1847 to stop the liberal revolts.
How did they show their displeasure? When the Spanish Monarchs passed through the streets there were no shouts, no flags in the balconies. The people stood silently, their hats still on their heads, no one waved a single scarf.
The Spanish newspapers wrote “We are not surprised by this silent and excessively cold reception on the part of the people, since we saw the ministries that linger in the Praça do Comércio entrance on Rua da Augusta, without any collar, adornment or emblem.”

Aragón has 4 world heritage sites, with one of them being exclusive of the area while the others are shared among different autonomous communities (and countries)
Mudéjar Architecture of Aragón (Teruel and Zaragoza)
Type: Cultural
The first manifestations of Aragonese Mudéjar have two origins: on the one hand, a palatial architecture linked to the monarchy, which amends and extends the Aljafería Palace maintaining Islamic ornamental tradition, and on the other hand, a tradition which develops Romanesque architecture using brickwork rather than masonry construction and which often displays Hispanic-rooted ornamental tracery.
Pyrenees- Monte Perdido (Huesca, shared with France)
Type: mixed
The Pyrénées – Mont Perdu is a World Heritage site straddling the border between Spain and France in the Pyrenees mountain chain. It includes two of Europe’s largest and deepest canyons on the Spanish side and three major cirque walls on the more abrupt northern slopes with France.
The site is also a pastoral landscape reflecting an agricultural way of life that was once widespread in the upland regions of Europe but now survives only in this part of the Pyrénées.
Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin (Aragón, shared with other autonomous communities)
Type: Cultural
Rock art of the Iberian Mediterranean Basin, is the name given to the group of over 700 sites of prehistoric Levantine art. The sites are in the eastern part of Spain and contain rock art dating to the Upper Paleolithic or (more likely) Mesolithic periods of the Stone Age. The art consists of small painted figures of humans and animals, which are the most advanced and widespread surviving from this period, certainly in Europe, and arguably in the world, at least in the earlier works. It is notable for the number of places included, the largest concentration of such art in Europe. Its name refers to the Mediterranean Basin; however, while some sites are located near the sea, many of them are inland in Aragon and Castilla–La Mancha; it is also often referred to as Levantine Art (meaning “from Eastern Spain”, not the Levant region).
Route of Santiago de Compostela: Camino Francés and Routes of Northern Spain (Huesca, shared with other autonomous communities)
Type: Cultural
A network of four Christian pilgrimage routes in northern Spain, the site is an extension of the Route of Santiago de Compostela. The extension includes a built heritage of historical importance created to meet the needs of pilgrims, including cathedrals, churches, hospitals, hostels and even bridges, and encompasses some of the earliest pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, following the discovery in the 9thcentury of a tomb believed to be that of St. James the Greater.

0I really enjoy learning about my family history. As an American, our backgrounds are often such a mess and a mystery. So here’s some interesting tidbits I’ve discovered!
- My grandfather was a dentist in the Navy. He worked at Walter Reed and had a couple Vice Presidents as patients.
- His friend (also a dentist) asked him to co-own a new company with him but with 5 kids, my grandfather couldn’t afford the buy in money. That company? Oral-B. We could have been rich. Ugh.
- My mother’s family has been written about in documents at the Vatican. They were Spanish nobility who immigrated and were given land in Italy.
- I have relatives from Bosnia. Who knew?
- My dad’s side is largely British and Irish. We are part of several Scottish clans such as the MacLeans, MacDonalds, and my personal favorite (thanks to Rowan Atkinson) Blackadders.
- Dad’s side also has English nobles. A couple of Barons and Baronets, a Viscount, and Arthur Acheson, the 1st Earl of Gosford.
- My grandfather was from a proper Protestant Irish family and my great-grandparents disowned him for marrying my Catholic grandmother.
- Said grandmother is of French and German descent and grew up in Amish country in Pennsylvania.
- Most of my dad’s family moved from Britain and Ireland to Nova Scotia. I wish they had stayed. What I wouldn’t give for Canadian citizenship right now!
- I have Albanian relatives who immigrated to Italy. The story was that a lot of Albanians who came to Italy (at one point in history) did so working as assassins.
- According to 23 and me I have the most widespread concentration of family in Ireland. I want to there so badly!
