She's clarity, and confusion. Never enough. Always too much. A simple, complicated, perfectly flawed mess.

Age: 32 Gender and pronouns: Female, She/Her Occupation: Social Worker Neighbourhood: Old Town

To say that Maya Garcia’s early life was tumultuous would be an understatement. Between her drugged up mother and her non-existent father, people said that she was set up to fail from the start. “She’ll turn out just the same,” people said. “Her daddy issues will always be a problem,” they predicted. Had it not been for her brother, they probably would’ve been right.
Without Nico Garcia, Maya wouldn’t have escaped her mother’s addiction for a few hours at the swimming pool every weekend. Minus her brother, she wouldn’t have gone to the library after school every Wednesday, ensuring that she missed her mom’s weekly drop off. The social worker would’ve never picked up on them had Nico not mentioned the fact that they hadn’t eaten for a few days to their teacher one morning as they walked into school.
But it was also Nico’s admission that got them taken away from their mother. It was Nico who told the social worker about their only next of kin – their aunt and uncle.  Nico was the reason they were shipped away from their soiled, unclean and neglected family home and over to Eureka, leaving them no longer just fatherless, but motherless too. It was this change that turned Nico and Maya from inseparable siblings to those who had to be split up from fighting in the playground. Although Nico faced the brunt of Maya’s anger, their aunt and uncle were slammed with it too. Maya would throw things at them, refuse to do anything they said and essentially made their lives more difficult than they ever had been, but yet they didn’t give up on her. Unlike her father, and her mother too, apparently. Why hadn’t she come to get them? What was it about them that made everyone around them leave?
With the angsty teen years on the horizon, Maya’s aunt and uncle were worried. They couldn’t control Maya and they worried that her life would indeed end up like her mother’s if they didn’t do something sooner. So what else do concerned aunts and uncles do? They made her join the local swim group and her brother the local American football team. “Sport will do them good,” the parenting courses told them. “It’s a healthy way for them to release their emotions. To have their own things,” and their aunt and uncle could only pray that they were right.
Various swim meets and football games later, Maya’s aunt and uncle knew they’d made the right decision. Maya and Nico absolutely loved their sports and their relationship had got better as a result. Sure, it wasn’t always perfect but it was better than it had been, and that was good enough.  Sport had calmed Maya down, too. It gave her an outlet for the stuff in her head and had actually helped her to process the things that had happened to her as a child more than she ever had before. This, in turn, helped her to see her brother in a new light and eventually, made her realise that he’d actually near enough saved her life.
Soon enough, it was time for Maya to look into colleges. Swimming was a priority, of course, and she’d work herself to the bone to get a scholarship if she could, but there was another career that also seemed to be calling to her. A career that meant kids like her and her brother wouldn’t have to suffer being neglected and coming second fiddle to addiction.
Eventually, hard work and dedication secured Maya a swimming scholarship and a place on the Social Welfare BA program at Berkley. The girl was thrilled. Not only did it mean she could swim at collegiate level, but it also meant she could study something that meant a lot to her, with the hopes of becoming a social worker in the future. It also meant moving away from Eureka, which was both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it meant a fresh start, new people, a chance to prove herself more. On the other hand, it meant leaving what had become her safe space, her old friends and the people she now, once again, saw as her family.
Maya felt out of her comfort zone at Berkley until she attended her first swim practise. As soon as she submerged herself into the water and did a couple of drills, her new home was found. The open aired pool at UC Berkley became her zone and the girls on her team became her people. They pushed her, they pushed themselves and they were a force to be reckoned with.
There was never a shortage of encouragement within the team, especially when it came to Maya wanting to seek out her father. The girls stood by her side as she investigated, searched and reached out across the states to find him and equally, held her hand when she met him and then months later, watched him disappear again after she’d asked him about why he’d left in the first place.
Encouragement also came in the form of Maya wanting to explore her sexuality. Having bisexual friends opened up her eyes to the journey of being bi-curious and also made her feel more confident with exploring this further. With this, the experimentation stage begun and Maya wasn’t afraid to experiment and see how things felt and what she preferred. But it was in her third year of college that her experimentation stage happily came to an end.
It was a swimming final that brought them together – or more specifically, an argument at a swimming final. Stanford Cardinal versus The Golden Bears. Everyone was hyped, ready and pumped full of adrenaline. There was no choice but to have your head in the game. And Maya’s was - she swam her races like a pro; freestyle swimming and breaststroke were like walking to her, but when it came to her team mate Molly’s butterfly race, something went wrong. Molly became unwell during her race, causing Stanford to win. Stanford’s home crowd went wild, even as Maya and her team dived into the pool to rescue their team-mate. Unfortunately, the girls hadn’t done enough, even without Molly’s unexpected turn in the pool, and were forced to take the loss, even after the worry of their team-mate falling ill.
It was as the girls were leaving a few hours later that a crowd of rowdy Stanford fans left the sports bar nearby. With their Golden Bear jerseys on, it wasn’t as if the girls were hard to spot, but it still didn’t warrant the drunken jeers they received as they walked towards their cars. And it wasn’t as if the girls didn’t try  to stop Maya storming over as anger surged through her. One punch later and Maya’s team-mates thankfully managed to pull her away before she was spotted by their coach.
Only later would Maya cool down and remember what she’d done. Nails tapping against their hotel room table, she knew she’d made a mistake and needed to fix it, so headed over to the Stanford sports bar with her team to try and solve the problem she’d caused.
He wasn’t hard to spot. Not with the cut on his eyebrow and the blood that he was wearing like battle paint down his face, and the Stanford jersey that seemed to goad the girls as they approached. Maya would’ve loved to say it was a matter of apologies being exchanged and that was that, but what actually happened was part of a much better story.
Two years of being in love passed quickly, and ended with the big question being popped at Maya’s family’s new years eve party. Maya, said yes like she had done to everything in the past few years, including a masters in social welfare and was content in her engagement bubble for another year. It was only when the wedding planning began and the two had been living together in California for a while did Maya start to realise that it wasn’t quite what she’d thought and also, not what she wanted anymore.
At 25, with her first social worker job under her belt, Maya broke off the engagement and took vows only to herself; to work on herself and find out what she truly wanted. She booked herself into therapy and pulled up all of her past trauma, all of her flaws and tried to work herself out.
A few years later, Maya returned to Eureka and lived with her brother for a few years until she could afford her own place. In the time that she was saving up, Maya spent more time getting to know herself, her desires and getting used to her new job, a new social work role in her home town. It was during this time that she met a girl, a girl who she fell in love with. But sadly, it was a girl who she couldn’t stay loyal to. Maya blames it on the fact that the girl asked her to marry her and that she’s realised she just can’t commit to forever, but this is something she’s still working through.
Continuing with therapy was one of Maya’s better decisions, as she truly believes that you’re never done working on yourself. Now in her own house too, Maya is trying to make less mistakes and to move forward with her life. She’s not sure what the future holds but she knows she’s excited to find out.

    Black Widow

    Year:  July 9, 2021

    Director: Cate Shortland

    Screenwriter: Eric Pearson

Actors: Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova / Black Widow, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian, O-T Fagbenle as Rick Mason, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov / Taskmaster, William Hurt as Thaddeus Ross, Ray Winstone as Dreykov, Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff / Black Widow

    Production Company: Marvel Studios

Synopsis:  Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy, and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.

    IMDb: 6.9/10

    Rotten Tomatoes: 81%

    Metacritic: 67%

    My Rating: 7.5/10

    Platform: Theaters

    My Thoughts: [Potential Spoilers]

Overall, a solid addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was funny and entertaining and touching at times. The pace was a little slow.

The beginning threw me off at first. I thought, who are these people, what’s going to happen, how are they involved? Yet, by the end of the sequence during the reveal of Natasha as a child, and the undercover spy family, I was invested. Even though technically they were the bad guys, they had us rooting for this cobbled together family. Which becomes something to carry us through the rest of the film.

I liked Yelana’s character a lot. She’s funny and young, and I can see her having a larger role in the tv universe. It was a nice farewell to Natasha’s character, not that she’s ever been my absolute favorite in the series. I was almost afraid they were somehow going to bring her back to life in the end credits. I liked Melina’s character. She was smart, soft, and still a badass. Alexei, I understood why they made him the way he did, but they spread the bravado a little too thick, and I found him more annoying than humorous.

What the movie could have done a little better was to introduce The Red Guardian and Rick Mason’s character’s more. It’s a small complaint really, because they were only side characters in the scheme of things. Maybe we’ll get more Red Guardian information in the TV shows. The Soviet super soldier is an interesting angle.

My favorite part of the movie, was the the montage of the girls being taken and indoctrinated into the widow program. It gave the movie such a dark and gritty feel, and I wanted the movie to continue on with that. I was careful not to watch any of the trailers, so I had no idea of the direction the movie was headed. So, I was disappointed when it wasn’t so much about Natasha’s life as a spy and defecting into SHIELD, but instead ended up being what it was. Which is one of the downfall’s of a franchise; there is a certain mood and expectation meant for the movies. If Black Widow were to depart and get darker and grittier, it wouldn’t fit with the rest of the films.
