Ormoc City or also known as the City of Beautiful People, is a first-class independent city in the province of Leyte in the eastern region of the Philippines. The name of the city is derived from ogmok, the archaic term of Visayan for “lowland” or “depressed plain.” According to the 2015 census, it has a population of 215,031 inhabitants, making it the second most populous city in the province after the provincial capital of Tacloban. Ormoc is the economic, cultural, commercial and transport hub of western Leyte.
I was born and raised in a small town/barangay called Tent City, Leyte, a high-level. A lot of people know the origin of my barangay because of the tragic flood that took place in Ormoc City, Leyte, in 1991. A lot of lives and houses have been affected. They said that before the horrific tragedy, our barangay didn’t have a name, and it was full of grass and trees.
After the flood of Ormoc City in 1991, the local government created a new area, which is our barangay, because it is a high-level land for those who have become homeless (lost their homes) due to the flood. Government set up tents in our barangay so that the people can have a place to live. That’s why they named our barangay “Tent City” because during that time it was full of “tent” where a lot of people using it as there temporary houses. As these homeless families found new homes, they emptied the land. Later on, the government sold these lots to the families of city employees, and that became the new little town – the Tent City. It is literally within the city zone of Ormoc City, and hence its nickname “City within a City.”
