Will didn’t allow himself to love anyone and showed kindness to nobody except his precious silver parabatai because he was aware that Jem will die probably not because of him, and even if he does die because of Will, it will be less painful and more unexpected and immediate. 

Jem is his sin because he thinks he kind of used his illness when he loved him and allowed Jem to love him.
