“Do you understand the implications of what you’re saying, my Nipponese friend?”
I’m going to stop you right there, my racist friend, and clear something up. I never really understand the implications of what I’m saying.
I’m mentally parkouring my way through this entire thing and have been as long as I’ve been practicing law. I have zero idea whatsoever what the implications of my accusations are, because to be quite honest, I’m not even totally sure what the immediate consequences are. This is a roller coaster for all of us.
In my brain, I know Susato probably got up from the gallery and walked down to the courtroom floor using stairs or some normal function when she makes her reappearance in The Return of the Departed Soul, but in my heart she saw that Ryunosuke was struggling and jumped down beside him from the gallery like the original Spiderman or something.
Ginasusa Week is now about a month away! If you plan to work on things in advance, here's a reminder, and also a reminder to continue reblogging our pinned post to spread the word!
dgs2-3 missing scene where ryuu sizes masked apprentice’s chest with a measuring tape
um um... yeah...
this was gonna be a personal button for myself but is anyone interested in buying this as a heart button?
Oh don't mind me, just once again thinking about how incredible The Great Ace Attorney games were and how I'll never recover as a person since playing them.
I wish I could experience them for the first time again, I really do, especially since I actually was so damn miserable playing through DGS1-2 over Kazuma and how fucking irritating Herlock was that I almost didn't continue the game and gave my friends and partner a horrible review of the game up til that point.
Like I went from being not very invested in case 1, to actively hating it in case 2, to halfway through case 3 realizing "wait this game is fucking incredible", to beating the second game and firmly deciding TGAAC are two of the absolute best games in the entire series hands down to the point playing the main timeline again might not be as satisfying.
Obviously I have some gripes or criticisms or even light-hearted mockery of some of the plot holes, but like. Ah. I just read someone else's long write out of how much they loved the game and the exact moment in DGS2-3 where you realize everything that was building up and I'm feeling so nostalgic for it all over again.

These lines. These lines right here, is why I’d like to ramble on why Ryuunosuke Naruhodou’s arc is legendary along with how masterful DGS’ writing is.
DGS started with establishing Asougi and Ryuunosuke’s friendship, which was clearly one of deep trust and bond. And it goes without saying that Naruhodou admired Asougi. He viewed him as a calm, just and a man with integrity. He saw him as an individual worthy of his utmost respect and admiration. That was his image of Asougi, ever since they became friends, and that stuck like hot glue. He put Asougi on a pedestal, and implied many times that he’d never dream to be equals with him.
Then, the incident happened where Naruhodou took Asougi’s place in the exchange programme in order to fulfill his ‘mission’ on his behalf (of course, he wasn’t aware of what he was getting himself into at the time.)
Naruhodou wasn’t on great start. He was a greenhorn when it came to law, his badge wasn’t even his, and he got manipulated to acquitting a murderer on his first trial, where he was basically dragged into on his first day in London. And lastly, he lived in the shadow of the person he admired and trusted in the duration of his time there; which also led to moments of self doubt, guilt and possibly imposter syndrome (As seen in case 2 where Naruhodou remarked he wasn’t even supposed to be in Britain, it was supposed to be Asougi.)
Then throughout the span of the two games, as we all well know, Naruhodou slowly grew confident in his capability and skill, and even found himself wanting to pursue an interest in law personally by calling himself a lawyer by his own volition. Although he was finally experiencing what it’s like to be a true attorney with real life applications, he still experienced lingering doubts when he realizes that he was in Asougi’s place.
Then comes the aftermath of Asougi being alive. Asougi in case 5 was full of hatred and desire for vengeance. Sure he was alive, but he wasn’t acting the same as the calm, collected human being the player saw.
Or more specifically, who Ryuu saw.
Because we were in the POV of Ryuunosuke the entire time, we thought Asougi wasn’t the same. We thought that the Asougi we knew was long gone, and was replaced with this other being who’s beyond recognition. We were put in place of how Ryuu was seeing him, so we felt the same amount of betrayal and hurt he was feeling.
In reality though, Asougi has always been like this. In 1-1, he always expressed strong hatred against injustice and corruption, and always reacted violently to it. He even showed aggressive tendencies when Ryuu presented evidence wrong. He even accepted an assassination exchange program just to go to Britain, and that was established in case1. But the game presented him in a way that’s through Ryuu’s eyes; the POV of an unreliable narrator.
On top of that, as was revealed by Holmes, was Asougi’s ACTUAL mission as an assassin. That was the clicker; that was the crack that Naruhodou needed to finally break his idealized version of Asougi. Because of that, Naruhodou once and for all realize his own self-worth, and how comparing himself to an idealized version of his best friend is not healthy, nor right for both parties. In fact, it was the element holding him back from realizing his true potential. In the moment he said ‘I’m not doing this for you’ to Asougi, he finally faces the music and realizes that Asougi is not the person he thought he was. Finally, that was first moment he thought of them as equals.
All of what he did from DGS1 lead back to Asougi’s dream; his choices were heavily relied on it.
This moment was the first time it wasn’t.
This is so interesting for a lot of reasons, but one is that this theme of idolization doesn’t just stop at Ryuu and Asougi. It also is shown between Klint and Barok; Maria and Courtney, Gina and Gregson. These examples idolized people people in their lives, but they had to come to terms with the fact they are far from perfect, and they were still very much human with flaws. And while it hurts to acknowledge it, it’s the necessary step for all of them to move forward when it comes their growth, which they all did in the end. I also love the switch between Asougi and Ryuu where Asougi was the first one who taught him and guided him, then their roles reversed in DGS2-5, as seen in the moment in where Ryuu called Asougi out in court. It really emphasizes on Ryuu’s growth as a lawyer and a person when he finally gained the confidence to call out the person he admired for so long.
On a side note, I love how absolutely unhinged he can be. You think he’s a nice well mannered looking man at first who could do no wrong but the second he sees some shady deal or any form of conspiracy, he intends to expose it until it stops bothering him, even resorting to technical blackmail, not giving a damn either on who he’s exposing or threatening for the sake of finding the truth. Why? Just because he wants to, you know?
Ryuunosuke truly has come such a long way from game 1, and this is why he personally sky rocketed as my favorite AA protagonist.

Nothing deep, no food for thought in this post. Just one tall, leggy boy for everyone's enjoyment.
Here’s chapter six! Please heed the warning before reading.

In case you couldn’t read my horrible handwriting 😂
Unironically, I think this is the closest I’ll ever get to shipping As/ryu/ and Sus/Ha/
stronghart to klint coercing him to kill the previous chief justice
[Major Great Ace Attorney Spoilers]
If I could change one thing about DGS 2, it'd be making Kazuma not a prosecutor after the case. He'd stay in England, yes. But be doing smth outside the law while fighting for a better system. Or at the very least be in a socialist organisation. He should totes be punching fascists.
Hey, Mr. van Zieks? I know you hate me and all but can I ask you a genuine question? Are you the only prosecutor in this entire country? It’s okay, you can tell me! I’m not mad or anything, I would just think that by now I would have at least seen another one but nobody’s even mentioned anyone else… Jeez, it was just a question, no need to bring my entire country’s judicial system into it…
For BaroryuuWeek Day4 no art but a FIC ! Enjoy!
