William Harris Snork's Resort
Stinky had disappeared from Moominvalley two years before Moomintroll and Snufkin left for the South together for the first time when his biggest scheme ever fell apart. That summer all of the villagers suddenly found their homes overrun with hundreds of Nibblings. They would eat everyone's food, take over all their rooms and insist on being waited on hand and foot at every hour of the day and night, always with the implied threat that they would chew down your house if you didn't comply. Two villagers who attempted to eject the Nibblings had this fate befall them, and everyone very quickly got the message.
The Inspector immediately started a secret effort to find out who was really behind this invasion. Nibblings are not known for their ability to organize themselves. They were thought of more like locusts, a living plaque known to occasionally descend on unfortunate communities and then disappear just as quickly. These Nibblings were showing every sign of having been lead to Moominvalley deliberately and they showed no signs of leaving.
The mystery quickly solved itself when, at the height of the crisis, Stinky appeared at The Inspector's police station offering to solve the problem, for a price, of course. It was self-evident that Stinky had brought the Nibblings to Moominvalley himself in order to extort money and resources from the villagers. He said that the villagers had to build a luxurious residence for the Nibblings and himself and keep it supplied with food and all other necessities if they wanted their homes back.
The Inspector and the villagers had very little choice but to comply. Stinky was surrounded by a gang of Nibblings at all times and no one dared to use violent means to eject them from Moominvalley. Everyone swallowed their anger and indignation as they built a four story luxury home for Stinky and the Nibblings. Meanwhile, The Inspector and Moominpapa organized the clandestine effort to come up with a way to rid Moominvalley of the invaders.
On the opening day of Stinky's mansion, a most unexpected thing happened. The instant the ribbon was cut, the Nibblings immediately demolished their new home and carried off Stinky helplessly on their backs towards Moominvalley Bay and out to sea. It took several minutes for the villagers to realize that they had just been freed. The celebration that followed was legendary.
Stinky now stood at the end of the grand dinning table, once again surrounded by a small crowd of Nibblings, all of whom were dressed in miniature tuxedos. Expressions of misgiving and outright fear grew on the faces of all the adults of Moominvalley, except for Moomintroll, who was becoming more enraged with every second.
"Well, William," said Stinky in a threatening tone, "I'm shocked that you would invite your country bumpkin brother and sister and all these odd children to this place. Surely you know that they don't deserve such fine food and accommodations? What would your parents say?"
William was about to reply with dignified indignation, but he was interrupted before he could begin by Moomintroll charging towards Stinky in a fury.
"Oh no! Not again, you.....! You're not pulling another one of your schemes on my family as long as I can do anything about it!", said Moomintroll, grabbing Stinky by the scruff of the fur on his head and by his rear end and dragging him bodily out of the room and then the mansion itself in very short order. Everyone in the dining hall was caught completely off guard. Even Stinky himself didn't respond out of shock until Moomintroll had dragged him halfway down the resort's driveway.
"Hey, Moomintroll! (Oof!) Wait a minute, will you?! (Ouch!)", Stinky pleaded, "You've got to help me! The Nibblings are keeping me like some kind of pet! You've got to hear me out!"
Moomintrol had reached the main gates of the villa and he suddenly realized that he had no idea how to open them. He cooled down just a little and took Stinky by his neck fur and dragged Stinky eye to eye with him.
"You know, Stinky, you only start to tell the truth when you're this desperate, so let's have it! Just remember that you don't have much time! Your friends back in mansion should be catching up to us at any moment!", said Moomintroll. Stinky's eyes grew wide with fear and he began to plead his case in a most pathetic manner.
"All right! All right! I joined up with the Nibblings because I thought that I could take over Moominvalley quickly leading them. What I didn't know was that they get bored easily and move on from one thing to the next on whims. They only took me with them when they left Moominvalley because they find me amusing. They won a fortune at France's casinos using me as a front man. They now own two of the biggest casinos in France and find growing their gambling empire fun, and they've been keeping me on as a mascot! It's only a matter of time before they become bored again, and then, well, The Booble alone knows what they might do! I came to William's resort to get in his good graces and get his help in getting me out of this. When I saw you all here, I thought blackmail would work faster. I'm very sorry! Please help me!", said Stinky.
Moomintroll carefully pushed Stinky through the bars of the gate. "I actually believe you, Stinky.", said Moomintroll through gritted teeth, "Head to the port. Our ship is an old pirate schooner. You can't miss it. Snufkin is watching over it. Be sure to tell him the truth just as you've told it to me! I'll let him decide what to do with you."
"Why Snufkin?", asked Stinky in a whiny voice.
"Because if I make this decision the way I'm feeling right now, I'll do something that I'll regret later but won't be able to take back and it wouldn't end well for you at all!", Moomintroll said in a tone that was genuinely threatening.
Stinky left in a great hurry and Moomintroll stomped back to the mansion, still in a smoldering rage. Even seeing the comic sight of the Nibblings running down the drive in pursuit of Stinky in the opposite direction failed to calm him down. Moomintroll began to fear reuniting with his family a little as he got closer to the mansion. He feared that he would say the wrong things to the beasts he loved. He feared that he would let out his rage at them. He made his way back to the dining hall with his head hanging down and when he opened its doors, he found his entire extended family gathered together at the foot of the dining table, their faces filled with concern and compassion for him.
Snork Maiden, Moomin, and Tayberry led the way, enveloping him in a loving group hug without saying a word, their eyes brimming with grateful tears of relief at his safe return. Moomintroll immediately began to weep openly at this show of love, releasing all of his anger in a torrent of tears. He hadn't had a good cry like this in a long time, and he had forgotten how much better tears were than bottled up frustration and rage. All of the members of the crew of The Scarlet Mymble and William Harris Snork himself gathered around Moomintroll, Snork Maiden, and their children to add their comforting smiles. Moomintroll was able to remember again that everything would be alright as long as they all faced whatever came together, and a smile began to return to his face through his tears.
