okay well now I’m getting emotional about clothing.
Billie and Thea grow up in hand me downs. Shirts that are much too large, pants they have to binder clip at the back - because. Well, b&t don’t have that much money (they’re young parents and they’re musicians, what can you say?). Bill has gotten pretty good at shortening pant legs over the years so they fit the girls somewhat better, at least, and Ted is basically always putting them both in his own shirts fresh out of the dryer, so at least whatever faded shirt they’re wearing (which is actually older than them) is clean. But it doesn’t bother the girls that much because Bill assures them that “what you are wearing is an absolutely excellent vintage Eddie Van Halen shirt” which is true, it is vintage at this point, but the kids at school still wonder why the girls are wearing boys clothes and why the boys clothes never fit.
But still it doesn’t matter to them. Because every now and then they all pile in the van - armed with snacks, teds top 90s hits 8 track, and cash - and go to a thrift store on the edge of town. The girls get to pick out new-ish clothes, all of which usually feature at least one neon color or geometric pattern, and Ted convinces Bill that that oversized t-shirt with the bunny that he’s both confused and amused by would make excellent crop top material. Bill gets Ted to buy yet another aggressively dad-like Hawaiian shirt, and Ted models it for the girls just to make them laugh.
And afterwards, with the cash they have leftover, they get ice cream and go to the park. It’s quiet, and calm, and of course Billie and Thea race through a group of birds just to make them fly away, while bill and ted feed the ducks in the pond. Almost every time afterwards, they rent a movie to watch when they get home. And later on in the night, after they’ve washed their new-ish clothes and watched their rented movie, even in their tired state, Bill and Ted don’t forget to tuck in and kiss goodnight each of the girls.
In ten years, when the girls get ready to go to college, and they’re packing away their things, they don’t pack most of their actually new clothes that they were able to buy when they got their own jobs. They pile into the van, and among other things, they are armed with an absolutely excellent vintage Eddie Van Halen shirt, and an expertly cropped top with an image of a bunny on it that somehow made it into thea’s closet years ago.
teds top 20 90s hits is still playing, and they wouldn’t have it any other way.
