Bought at Gerrard’s Market from Redlands, California for $13.99, Panil Barriquée is an oak-aged sour red ale crafted by Birrificio Torrechiara from Parma, Italy.

The smell of cranberries, cherries, cognac, and a fair, straw Brettanomyces yeast funk is noted as you drink. The appearance is burgundy with a low white head. When held up to light, the color shifts to an orange amber, reveals a cloudy body, and shows tiny particulates. The alcohol content is 8%.

Cranberries slightly tarts the take and relatively sweetens the complexion. Cherries adds an emphasis to the tart and sweetness. Roasted barley flavors the body and softly textures the mouthfeel, which is deepened by a subtle chocolate malt. Cognac blends with the cherry and chocolate mixture, gently spices the take, and boozes the drink.

Vanilla is fairly rich, tones the body, and smoothens the drink alongside the cognac. Honey provides a light sweetness, tangible with the roasted barley, and tasted when you lick your chops. Brettanomyces yeast imbues a fair, straw funk to the body, and enhances the smoothness of the cognac and vanilla. Lactobacillus gives off a soft acidic tinge to the mouthfeel that is drawn out at room temperature. Oak imparts a woodsy touch to the cherry, cognac, honey, and roasted barley combination.

Panil Barriquée is a sensual barrel aged sour red ale. Cranberries, cherries, roasted barley, chocolate malt, cognac, vanilla, honey, Brettanomyces yeast, Lactobacillus, and oak combine into an exquisite craft beer. Cranberries and cherries dazzles upon the cognac flavor and feel. The cognac, vanilla, honey, and Brettanomyces yeast combination is rich enough to mellow the tart and sour experience. The cranberry, cherry, and Lactobacillus tart is stronger at room temperature for a fan of sour beer; 3.6 out of 5 for a newcomer, but you should serve this one cold to ease that. I cherished every single drink and enamored by the complexity and depth. This sour beer can be unimpressive for a fan of sour beer when you serve this cold, but it is better at room temperature.

Cheers. Prost. Drink for the love of beer.
