Honestly, if you don’t care deeply for your fellow humans, if no part of you feels a connection and kinship even with people on the opposite side of the globe, who you have never met, then I don’t want to know you. I can’t understand people who just… don’t care unless it affects them. People who can joke about real human suffering simply because they do not personally know the humans who are suffering. What is that like?
I know I’m a soft bleeding heart, but how do you not even recognize yourself in the face of another? The human animal is diverse and far-ranging, but we come from the same root. We all sing and dance and make dumplings. If I am a brief moment of the universe consciously experiencing itself, so is everyone else. Each of our brief moments has never happened before and will never happen again in the exact same way. What a wonderful, valuable thing!
And what a sad thing when people’s moments are cut short. Even by random events that no one could have prevented. Perhaps especially then. How do you not mourn their ending? How do you justify the lack of feeling? It makes sense that you would be most affected by the people who are close to you, but truly, does no part of you resonate with your distant cousins at all?
Now, that’s a tragedy.
