(For the Ten of Crows (Seven of Umbrellas) AU)
The story behind how Kaz Brekker ended up on his back on the floor of the Hargreeves mansion kitchen is not nearly as dramatic and interesting as he´d like. It´s all, regretfully, about stupidity, about underestimating the badnes of this Bad Pain Day. He had left his cane leaning against the kitchen counter, aiming to instead steady himself on the table as he took a step away to grab something, and his leg had completely betrayed him, exploded in a level of pain he rarely feels anymore, and now here he is, staring up at the ceiling.
He tried to sit up or roll over, but it got worse, so he has resorted to just laying there and staring at the ceiling lamp. Maybe their creepy nsnny finds him, he figures. Inej left to hang out with Vanya earlier today, and Jesper, Diego and Klaus are somewhere caosing complete chaos, and for the others he has no idea where in this ridickolusly large house they are. He has just started contemplaiting such an humiliating act as to shout for someone, when there´s a woosh. He doesn´t have to look, he knows it´s Five, heard it on the noise the spatial jumps makes.
The oldest of the Hargreeves siblings comes walking into the kitchen, spots the cane, stops and turns, and then spots Kaz himself, not speaking as he looks back.
“Are you...? Supposed to lay there?“ he asks, just as he starts to load and start the coffee machine.
Kaz briefly considers his situation and his options. leg still burning and aching horribly, and he grits his teeth. Five observes him, looks to his cane, and then back to Kaz.
“Do you... need help up?“ he asks, in a voice that sounds so awkward, like he´s way out of his comfort zone.
Kaz hisses in return, a sharp noise, and does a move to push himself up into sitting position. His leg splits right open, at least that´s what it feels like, and as much as he doesn´t want to he can´t stop himself from crying out, hands closing into tight fists against the floor.
Five´s next to him in a woosh, briefly hovering over him but quickly backing away after a beat.
“Easy, easy“, he tries, grabbing the sleeve of his shirt with his teeth, pulling it up over his hand and grabbing it in his fist from the inside ot the skeeve, so the fabric will keep even the leather gloves from coming in contact with his bare skin as he offers his hand to him.
Kaz stares at the fabric-covered hsnd, and then swallows and grabs it. He´s pulled up so he´s standing, most of his weight on his good, left, leg, and Five makes his cane go from where it´s leaning against the counter to directly into his hand with a woosh, Kaz closing his hand around the crow´s head on the top and relaxes, if just a little.
Five hovers nearby him as he makes it over to the kitchen table and takes a seat, both of his hands clutching the top of his cane as the smaller of them goes over to the coffee machine, so lost in his own mind he doesn´t notice the coffee is done until Five sets down a cup right in front of him. He startes down into the dark liquid, silently gritting his teeth as his leg continues to hurt. Sometimes he tries to move it when it hurts cause that occasionally helps, but he doesn´t dare to move it now if it will hurt more so he just sits absolutely still instead. Five takes a seat across from him and sips his coffee, slowly and full of thoughts, in that way that really make him look like the 58 year old he really is. He doesn´t ask, doesn´t push, and something about that makes Kaz want to tell him. He´s never met anyone like Five before, and he decides to chalk it up to that.
He breaths in.
“My leg hurts like hell.“
Five takes another sip.
“That what made you fall?“
Kaz nods weakly.
“Yes. I tried to grab onto the table, but it hurt too much, and-“
“You were on the floor“, Five finishes.
Kaz´ gaze goes down to his gloves.
“I used to be in pain after training sometimes.“
“What halped?“ Kaz asks.
Five doesn´t reply.
“What helped?“ he repeats.
Five clutching his cup.
“A hug. But I figured that- Won´t be relevant here“, he says, gesturing around.
Kaz says nothing. A moment passes.
“You want to hear about the secrets of the universe?“ Five asks, suddenly.
Kaz perks up.
Five shakes his head.
“When my siblings were upset, or in pain, I would tell them about the universe. I had this gigant book on astronomy I was really proud of, and I would read to them from it“, Five explains.
Kaz nods, slowly, taking it all in. He looks down at his coffee, and figures he hasn´t got anything to lose.
“Alright, then, go ahead“, he says, sipping his own coffee slowly.
Five starts talking, about time and space and planets and stars, and as Kaz listens the pain in his leg becomes a little lighter, a little easier to handle.
