JazzWax pays tribute to the “Rockin’ Chair Lady”, Mildred Bailey, whose soft, subtle swing was a favorite of listeners and a host of jazz musicians during the 1930s and 1940s. Our 10-CD Mosaic release is now a collector’s item, but Marc Myers has included some gems to re-visit or to get acquainted with.
folk or rocknroll? sammy or danny? bell bottoms or flowy skirts? josh or jake? drums or vocals? moonlight or sunlight? bass or guitar? gold pants or striped pants? you’re the one or always there? guitar solos or drum solos? rat-tail or curly afro? from the fires or anthem of the peaceful army? mountains or meadows?
Combat made me weak in the knees it is so beautiful; vocals, slow and simple instrumentals, and lyrics that are guided by realism and tinged with heartbreak.
Off My Mind steps it up a little bit with poignant keys and pointed drums behind a whimsically layered vocal arrangement. The parts with staccato keys and lyrics like “i don’t want to let my life just pass me by” were optimistically motivating, and made the song’s message stand out among the fluffy prettiness of the music.
Shaking takes it a bit further still with a faster chorus that never feels like too much, because of how they’ve scaled everything back and blended it nicely. That act of blending makes it more powerful when certain things are brought forward, as if in the foreground of a painting.

Shinysides; Yet another week goes by and it is already time for another Shinysides acoustic session. This time we head back to the 80’s. This band bridged the Manchester independent rock music of the 1980s and the emerging UK rave scene, drawing influence from funk, house, and psychedelia to pioneer the Madchester sound. This week we bring you Shinysides version of Kinky Afro from the Happy Mondays. Enjoy!
