“I’ve come here for Wei Wuxian,” Wang Lingjiao says as she perches on the edge of the carved lotus seat. “He’s-”
“Then you can have him,” Madam Yu agrees easily.
Wei Wuxian blinks once. Twice. Then turns toward her slowly, sure that he must have misheard.
But Wang Lingjiao and Jiang Chang are both staring at her with the same open-mouthed astonishment he feels.
“What-” Jiang Cheng finally manages.
Wang Lingjiao’s mouth snaps shut with an audible click and then she smiles, smiles so wide it spills out of her in a peal of laughter that rings across Sword Hall.
“Mother, what do you mean?” Jiang Cheng protests. “You can’t-”
Madam Yu rounds on him with all the force of a glacier and he shrinks, a little, before valiantly trying to press on despite it. “But- he…” he swallows, eyes darting to Wei Wuxian and back. “Father would never allow-”
“Your Father isn’t here, is he?” she snaps. “And haven’t I always said that Wei Wuxian would do nothing but create trouble for Yunmeng Jiang if we allowed him to remain here, running wild and doing whatever he likes?” she asks, glaring at Wei Wuxian with glittering eyes.
“Well,” she says, raising her voice loudly enough for everyone to hear the declaration plainly – “he’s no blood of ours.”
Jiang Cheng cries out wordlessly as Wei Wuxian staggers in place, one hand coming up to clutch at his chest like she’s just slashed him with Zidian.
Her gaze coldly sweeps across the room before turning to look up at Wang Lingjiao once more.
“And his actions are not a reflection of those of Lotus Pier.”
“Wait!” Jiang Cheng rushes forward and grabs onto her sleeve. “Wait, Mother, you- you can’t be serious-”
She pulls out of his grasp without bothering to break her gaze with Wang Lingjiao, who is openly delighted at this unexpected turn of events.
“If you want him,” Madam Yu says with a sharp flick of her upturned wrist in Wei Wuxian’s direction, ignoring Jiang Cheng completely, “then by all means, come and collect him.”
