I got carried away with A Shadowsight design.
This artsy vintage grunge thing was created with the Brushstroke app and I used Pixlr for the old grungy frame. This photo from my iPhone was cropped to close-up and then converted to black and white. Athena’s Caturday Art Blog Hop JOIN THE CAT ON MY HEAD FOR MORE SUNDAY SELFIES! Today's anime cat of the day is:
Marody from The New Adventures of Kimba the White Lion!
“I’ve got wet food, Cupcake. Are you coming?”
Dumb Husky and His White Cat Shizun AU: Xia Sini introduces himself as Chu Wanning's child.
BEWARE SPOILERS FOR EVERYTHING.
If Mo Ran and Xue Meng hadn’t been too distracted to bicker, they would not have been able to hear the serious little voice when they entered the inner room room at Loyalty Hall.
“…then I will cultivate in Red Lotus Pavilion.”
“Then why don’t we just make the announcement that Yuheng Elder is ill?” Xue Zhengyong asked.
Xue Meng’s eyes widened at the news, and he barged in without further thought.
“Father, Mother! Shizun is sick?”
The room went silent. Xue Meng paused at the door like a dumb bird crashing against a translucent barrier.
Mo Ran walked in after Xue Meng at his usual leisurely pace. He had felt a jolt of something like curiosity at the kid’s casual claim to Red Lotus Pavilion, and an even greater one at the news that Chu Wanning was sick. It was nothing like Xue Meng’s concern, though.
“Little shidi?” Xue Meng finally squawked. “What are you doing here?”
It was indeed the young disciple, Xia Sini, that they had met yesterday. His eyes were wide and -Mo Ran recognized this look very well- guilty.
“Why are you asking permission to enter Red Lotus Pavilion?” Xue Meng demanded. “Do you know my Shizun?”
Mo Ran stared at Xia Sini. The kid had not asked permission. He had announced his intention, as if he knew he had permission. Or, rather, like someone who did not need to wait for permission. But that made no sense. Xue Meng and Mo Ran knew exactly how particular Chu Wanning was about his space. His own disciples were not allowed to walk in and out of Red Lotus Pavilion as they pleased.
So why was this kid, who was supposedly Xuanji Elder’s disciple, planning to move in? What relationship did he claim with Chu Wanning that allowed such intimacy? An uncomfortable possibility occurred to Mo Ran.
Xia Sini had returned Mo Ran’s stare for a few moments, but in the time that Mo Ran’s mind was spinning, Xia Sini had regained his calm expression.
“Yuheng Elder is my father,” Xia Sini said.
Mo Ran noticed then. The phoenix eyes, just like Chu Wanning’s. The exact same taste in food. The cool, unblinking pause when Mo Ran’s antics failed to impress him.
Xia Sini was exactly like Chu Wanning!
Mo Ran stomach felt like it crashed to his feet. He felt so uneasy and upset that he didn’t know what to do- whether it was yowl in incoherent confusion like Xue Meng, or grab Xia Sini and demand answers, or run to Red Lotus Pavilion to confront Chu Wanning, every option was wrong.
He took some deep breaths to try to get a grip, and tried to pay attention to the discussion going forward.
“No, Meng-er, you mustn’t think badly of your Shizun. The truth is…” Xue Zhengyong said, but then he faltered.
Xue Zhengyong looked to his wife for help. The rest of them instinctively looked at her too. How could they not think badly of Chu Wanning? It was shocking enough that he had produced an illegitimate child. But Chu Wanning had always turned his nose up at the merest hint of impropriety. The hypocrisy was shattering Xue Meng’s world.
“She never told him,” Madam Wang explained, and then blushed.
There was a skeptical pause.
“Xia Sini’s mother…she didn’t want to bother Yuheng Elder,” Madam Wang said. “The only reason Yuheng Elder- ah, that is, she needed a partner for dual cultivation, for her health…”
She blushed deeper and went silent.
“Rufeng Sect dared ask that of Shizun?” Xue Meng asked, outraged. “No wonder Shizun left!”
Mo Ran nearly whimpered in distress. He had been hoping to hear something ridiculous, like that Xia Sini was the product of a passionate tryst. The idea of Chu Wanning frivolously discarding his own purity and condescending to tangle with anyone was laughable. Impossible. But if someone convinced Chu Wanning that there was a life on the line, that the only way she could be saved was if Chu Wanning dirtied himself…
Mo Ran wavered, and blurted, “Shizun looks down upon dual cultivation. How could he have-”
Madam Wang lowered her head at their reactions, perhaps shying from their fervent emotions. Xue Zhengyong reached a hand out immediately to comfort her.
“Yuheng Elder did his duty in a difficult situation,” Xue Zhengyong replied firmly. “There was no dishonor in his actions. Whether he liked it or not is irrelevant.”
Xue Meng exhaled in relief. “You’re right, father.”
Madam Wang glanced up again, but her expression remained shy.
“If he did like it,” Xue Zhengyong added, quietly, “Then he suffered less, and it’s all the better.”
“That’s enough,” Xia Sini said, with shocking authority for a six-year-old.
The situation was awkward for everyone present. Xia Sini himself was probably the most embarrassed to discuss his parents’ entanglement.
“Is this true, little shidi?” Xue Meng asked.
“Xia Sini probably hasn’t read the letter his mother left us explaining this,” Xue Zhengyong said, “But perhaps your mother has told you herself?”
He looked at Xia Sini, who glared back in mortified indignation.
“Little shidi?” Xue Meng prompted, and he sounded a little nervous again.
Xia Sini looked at him, and then he sighed.
“It is true,” Xia Sini confirmed in a flat tone.
Mo Ran tried to avoid Xia Sini after that.
It wasn’t that he didn’t like the kid, and certainly he was the last person on earth who could look down on him for his origins, but…
…but, somehow, looking at him hurt. It was a pain with a sour taste, like drinking vinegar and having it drip into deep injuries.
He looked at Xia Sini’s little phoenix eyes, the way he frowned in thought, the way he held himself, and he looked so much like Chu Wanning that Mo Ran ached.
Worse, he looked like a figure from the dreams Mo Ran had had during the darkest, loneliest days of his previous life. When Chu Wanning was dead, Taxian-Jun had nothing to do but dream.
He didn’t miss Chu Wanning. It was impossible that he should miss someone he hated so deeply. But, he wish there was a remnant of Chu Wanning. The warm flame of him without the hatred, without the cold ruthlessness.
Someone like Chu Wanning’s child. Of course Chu Wanning belonged to him, so the child could only be his and Taxian-Jun’s. He had thought about this child far, far too much, and with too much emotion.
It hurt to see this child now and realize that though Taxian-Jun had not had it, someone else had. This unknown woman had managed to have this part of Chu Wanning. Even after Chu Wanning was gone from her life, she had kept this living remnant of him.
It hurt to see this child. It somehow hurt even worse to not be able to see Chu Wanning. It felt too much like the nightmares of his previous life.
In short, Mo Ran did not avoid Xia Sini.
“Nous somme tous Fou” du Chat de Cheshire de Alice au Pays des Merveilles
“We’re all Mad” by the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland.
Thinking about how Mo Ran 1.0 woke up in that brothel, (still very much TXJ just without the flower) and his first reaction was wanting to fix everything. He thought he knew where he fucked up and he wanted to stop that from happening. His first reaction to being reborn was wanting to save others.
So I was watching some Pokémon, as one does, and then I saw THIS.
The twins, talented at dancing, both quiet yet strong passion in theater🎭

The Erins: Use Snowkit to introduce the fact that white cats with blue eyes are often deaf.
Also the Erins: Never bring it up again and don’t have another deaf blue-eyed white cat in the whole series.
