Decembird has come & gone, I apologize I didn’t keep y’all in the loop. I did about 15 this year, but sent them as Christmas cards so I don’t have any good images of ‘em beyond sketches. Perhaps my 2019 resolution should be to better document my art. Anyway, moving on!

Roughly only 600 whooping cranes in the wild; some people that work in the sanctuaries for them around here (in Nebraska) go their whole lives not seeing a single one. ;-; I’m still shook that I got to. ❤️
Or at least, human-raised ones are. See, if humans take them away from adult cranes, they have NO IDEA how to act like a parent. Case in point: one crane rolled its kid (in the egg) off the best into the water. For no reason. Just… plop.
My prof’s comment? “And people wonder why they’re endangered…”
A resident Whooping Crane (Grus americana) with a flock of migratory Greater Sandhill Cranes (Antigone canadensis). Florida has a small population of resident whoopers and, judging by the leg bands, this is the second individual I’ve seen around Micanopy.
The feature attraction at the International Crane Foundation display is the Whooping Crane (Grus americana). At five feet it is the tallest flying bird in North America.
By the mid-40s there were only 21 of these birds left in the wild. Today that number is around 500, in part due to the efforts of this foundation. They hold over 30 captive Whooping Cranes at their headquarters and produce about ten to 20 chicks each year for release into the wild.
I’m keeping up with Inktober, I swear! Backlog of drawings coming soon.
For now, here’s Day 17, “graceful”
North America’s tallest bird, the whooping crane has become critically endangered due to habitat loss. As of 2015, the total population has dwindled to just 603 cranes.
- Whooping Crane, although not whooping in this picture. Just sort of, you know, chilling. -
