Gonna be honest, Lower Decks is probably my favourite among the new Star Trek shows so far. Like, I’m a huge nerd and have been loving all of the new shows in their own way, but Lower Decks just hits different. For me, it’s mainly because they really nailed the aesthetics, I think.
Like, I don’t mind that Discovery and Picard (and likely Strange New Worlds as well) all have this clean shiny aesthetic to them. The sound design has that modern futuristic oomph to it. The music certainly fits with that aesthetic, too, with the hybrid orchestral music. And it’s all still recognizably Star Trek, just polished up a bit. My only real gripe is the way they render their holograms, but that’s a rant for another post.
However, Lower Decks just really hits it out of the park somehow?? They’ve got the comfy spaceship that I would actually want to serve on, the familiar sound design with some modern twists, and the music even feels familiar too, calling back to the sound of the 80s/90s shows. And it’s interesting that even though it was only meant to be this silly little animated comedy that just happens to be set in the Star Trek universe, ironically it actually captures the vibe of Star Trek really well, and dare I say, it does so better than the current live action shows have managed to do so far.
